3 Ultra Filling Soup Recipes August 29, 2018 at 08:16PM

via Girl With Curves https://ift.tt/2NvJgyj

Because one of my goals this year is to focus on eating healthier meals and Dave became Vegan eight months ago, we’ve been cooking more at home — which means we’re always looking for recipes that are easy to prep, have fresh ingredients, and fill us up. I usually eat a quick breakfast, so lunch is when I want to have something heartier, though not so hearty that I feel weighed down.

That’s where soups come in! Something you may not know about me is that I’m a die-hard soup person. I love soup and would eat it for every meal if I could. (And if you follow me on instagram, you might have seen a couple of Dave’s cooking takeovers!).

Soups are great because they pack a lot of protein, fiber, and veggies into a single bowl and you can prep them ahead of time and freeze or refrigerate them for later. It’s a no-brainer option for lunch, because I can just heat up a bowl in the microwave if I’m working. Plus, kids love soup! Any meal that’s a hit for me and my entire family is an instant win in my book.

Here are three delicious recipes I keep coming back to:

Epic Cover Letter Tips With Parlour X’s Founder Well, hello there! Are you currently looking for a new job? Maybe you’ve been putting off updating your resume for eons, but can no longer afford to keep burying your head in the sand? Don’t worry, I’m not here to judge. On a scale of taking out the trash to filing taxes, writing a cover letter rates as a solid 10 in terms of things I hate doing. It’s a universally acknowledged fact that writing cover letters suck, and you’d be hard pressed to find someone who enjoys the process (if they say they do, they’re almost certainly lying to themselves/you).  Welcome to the latest instalment of our ‘Epic Cover Letter Tips’ series. Each month, we’ll be picking the brains of industry experts for tips on how to write the best mother flippin’ cover letter in the world to make the whole process a lil’ less daunting. This time around, we chat to Eva Galambos, founder of best ever fashion boutique Parlour X. Aside from having flawless taste, Eva knows a thing or twenty about hard work, drive and what makes a solid cover letter that’ll stand out from the crowd, hence us asking her a bunch of questions about them below.  Raise your pen, and let’s toast to taking over the world, one epic cover letter at a time.  Key do’s and don’ts…  “Do show your personality. Potential employees want to get to know you, and your cover letter is the perfect place to do this. Save the more clinical facts and stats for your CV. Do double and even triple check your spelling and grammar. Nothing looks as sloppy as someone who hasn’t made the effort to run a cover letter through Spellcheck. Even better? Ask a close friend (or two) who are sticklers for spelling and grammar to proofread it for you. Do include your main contact information, even if you also listed these on your CV. Don’t forget to do your research. Find out the name of the person or persons who are doing the hiring and address it to them, using their name. Misspelling their name or using a generic ‘hiring manager’ comes across as cold or, worse, lazy. If you can’t find out, a simple “To whom it may concern” will suffice. Also, research the company and weave in relevant details. Don’t ramble. No-one has an hour to read a three page cover letter. You should be able to summarise your experience, why you’re perfect for the role and your overarching driving professional motivation in a few short sentences.” The purpose of a cover letter is…  “The cover letter should be a shorter, more personable version of a candidate’s CV. Often dates and dot-points get a bit dry after the 98th submission, so make the life of the hiring manager easy by being succinct, interesting and easy to read. Give them something to remember you by.” Stand out by… “Use a graphic layout similar to your CV, but not so overly-designed that it’s hard to read. A basic Word doc can easily get lost. Use the hiring manager’s name, tailor your cover letter for the actual role you’re applying for, and for extra brownie points drop the key terms or phrases that they use in the job advertisement.” Always include…  “Always introduce yourself by way of explaining your overarching career goal. Then include a brief summary of the most recent and/or most relevant work experience and explain how this makes you perfectly suited to the role. Include something that shows your personality or will make you memorable.” Leave out… “Omit headshots (they’re just creepy… and potential employers will probably look you up on Google/Instagram/Facebook anyway). Leave out detailed break downs of your education or previous achievements. These can be listed more succinctly in your CV.  And leave out exclamation points – you should be able to express your passion for the role without this.” The perfect length is…  “200 words, maximum.” Lead collage, Emily Gill of @egstudio.co | Words, Madeleine Woon | With thanks to Eva Galambos of Parlour X The post Epic Cover Letter Tips With Parlour X’s Founder appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. 5 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Bags Under Your Eyes August 24, 2018 at 12:45PM

via Girl With Curves https://ift.tt/2o8yvqA

Thanks to late nights and early mornings with my daughter, who is now 8 months old, I’ve had to battle a common side effect of not getting as much sleep as I usually do: under-eye circles and bags.

While a good concealer (and my tricks for instantly making eyes look more awake) can help make the bags less visible, I prefer to find natural ways to get rid of them because it ultimately saves time in my routine and will last longer than makeup does.

Here are five non-invasive ways I’ve recently tried that have helped tone them down, while refreshing my eye area at the same time — and they only require ingredients that are likely already in your kitchen!

10 Things About Me August 24, 2018 at 12:45PM

via Girl With Curves https://ift.tt/2BPDdD4

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a few years since I’ve done an About Me post, and I’ve noticed lots of new readers stopping by recently, so I wanted to take some time to reintroduce myself to those of you who have been following along for a while, and say hello and welcome to those of who who are new to GWC!

I started this blog in 2011 as a creative outlet outside my former career in the tech industry. Shortly after, I decided to put a mission behind it: to show women they can look and feel amazing at any size.

I’m a mom of three – a little boy named Narayan (who I call Nyan, 4 years old), and a baby girl named Madina (whom I call Minnie, 8 months old) and an English Bulldog named Kingston (whom I call Kingy, 6 years old).

I’m multi-racial American (mostly African and Caucasian descent) and my husband is Indian, from New Delhi, India. My maiden last name is Ferguson, married name is Awasthi – pronounced Uh-was-tea.

I’m a full-time lifestyle blogger, covering Style, Beauty + Living here on GirlWithCurves.com, on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube.

I’m the oldest of 6 — I have 4 little sisters and 1 brother. We all resemble, but have different skin tones and hair textures.

I live in the SF Bay Area, but I’m often in NY for work, especially this year while my design collab. with Lane Bryant was in the works! More on that here – the collection launches in a couple weeks on 9/9!

I’m typically a size 12/14 on top and 16 on bottom, and I’m 5 feet ten inches, with a size 12 foot. (And the sizes I’m wearing are always listed in the details section of each outfit post here on the blog).

My hair is naturally curly and I love my curls, however, I didn’t embrace them until I was 22, when I met a girl with hair similar to mine who loved her curls. She inspired me to love my own. I stopped straightening my hair and now I rarely go straight.

I have a degree in English from UC Berkeley (go Bears!) and I’m a licensed Esthetician.

I battled eating disorders in my teens, then excessive exercise, diet pills and calorie restricting in my 20’s. It wasn’t until I injured my knees so bad I could barely walk that I had a major wake-up call and learned to accept my body in its natural, curvy state. You can read more about my journey to self-love on my About page.

I have a very small circle of non-internet friends who are mostly my sisters (#TrueStory), but I consider each and every person I connect with through Girl With Curves a friend!

6 Instagram-Worthy Makeup Looks To Try This Weekend When it comes to sourcing a hot new makeup look to try out on the weekend (or, you know, any day of the week pending your office/school dress code), you really can’t go past Instagram. From on-trend lewks like neon and glitter, to trusty favourites like ~no-makup makeup~ and a glossy lip, these girls will inspire you to reach deep into your makeup bags and emerge a Pat McGrath-in-the-making. I’ll be real, I’ve never been the most proficient makeup artist—in fact, for most of my twenties I wondered where I was when the lessons on properly applying makeup were being handed out. Probably holed up reading a book somewhere, or more likely, in my bed staring at the ceiling. Recently, I’ve changed my ways. Books have been replaced by YouTube makeup tutorials (my skill levels still don’t attest to this, I don’t really watch them for their educational purposes, but rather because of their meditative/therapeutic effects), and my makeup bag looks the best it ever has. How’s that for a humble brag? Before you lose yourself to the magic that is the following 6 instagram-worthy makeup looks, lose a good chunk of your time (well spent) LOL’ng at @terrybarberonbeauty and his weird makeup inspo—from the royals to the modest garbage bag. Ready? Let’s go… Sweet As Candy  the best is yet to come A post shared by Sarah Feingold (@sarah.feingold) on Jun 25, 2017 at 1:16pm PDT Turn your face into a confectionary store with a bubblegum pink beauty lewk. This makeup looks best on fresh, dewy skin so make sure you do your prep. Intentionally Flushed drip addresses those who came thru drippin but fails to mention copious amount of sweat/constant lingering unattended body oder of the season still a dope track though A post shared by Susannah Liguori (@susannahiliguori) on Jul 17, 2018 at 5:03pm PDT Who says blush is reserved just for the cheek area? Popularised by shy, awkward teens, the flushed look is totally having a moment, and while I might skip it due to my generally rosacea-tinted skin, I implore you to try it for yourself. Again, dewy skin is a must, so make sure you thoroughly prep the skin before you try this at home. Bronzed Beb Headacheeeeeeeeeee (。 ́︿ ̀。) A post shared by 𝕵𝖎𝖆𝖍𝖊 𝖅𝖍𝖆𝖓𝖌 (@better_pray_to_jeebus) on May 18, 2018 at 7:07am PDT Ring the alarm, ’cause the bronzed look just got an *actually* wearable upgrade. I’ve been hankering to make friends with my bronzer for a while now, but flashes of my heavily caked-on face in the early noughties was enough to make me step the eff away. This lewk, with it’s subtle, matching eyeshadow and bronzer, is the push I needed to rekindle the flame. Also, will for sure be adding cute clips a la the above honey. Somewhere Over The Rainbow didn’t see you in a while A post shared by Sarah Feingold (@sarah.feingold) on Jul 16, 2018 at 10:11am PDT A touch more complicated than the previous looks, the effort put in will be far outweighed by the compliments you’re bound to receive if you do. A Flick Of Neon A post shared by @ bbgorlambs on Jul 21, 2018 at 7:45am PDT Neon is officially in, and the easiest way to grab a piece of the pie for yourself is to add a flick of it to your eye region. Cah-ute! A Hint Of Metallic  Silver A post shared by María Bernad (@maria_bernad) on Jun 19, 2018 at 9:35am PDT Ditto, glitter. If you can’t afford to fork out thousands for a pair of the Chanel glitter boots, treat your eyelids to the royal gliteratti treatment instead. 3 Ways To Dress Up Your ‘Jeans And A T-Shirt’ Combo Whenever I wind up wearing jeans and a t-shirt, the process is akin to scouring Netflix for an hour in search of an exciting new TV show, only to land on one of my old favourites (Friends, Sex and The City, Peep Show, etc). While I love the idea of ~experimenting~ and branching out with my style—in much the same way as I do my viewing tastes—sometimes it feels good to lean into what you know. Ya know? That’s not to say the ol’ jeans and tee outfit has to put you to sleep, though. With a few flicks of the magic wand — a.k.a the addition of some cute accessories or an ~unexpected style twist~ — your outfit can go from b-o-r-i-n-g to c-o-o-l in no time. Read on for fresh and exciting ways to breathe life into your trusty favourites, and then we can all meet in the comments section to talk about how Friends will always be the greatest TV show ever made. Okay? Ok! Go To Town On Accessories feel like a snack in our cute new accessories, available now on the COH SHOP (link in bio) A post shared by CHRONICLES OF HER (@chroniclesofher_) on Aug 16, 2018 at 1:02am PDT Honestly, I need to hunt down whoever gave rebirth to the scrunchie trend, and personally shake their hand. Scrunchies are the cutest and easiest way to add ~personality~ to an outfit, they won’t damage your hair, and they’re about as cost effective as they come. And, why stop there? Add a beaded bag, a pair of gold hoops, and a red lip, and then sit back and revel in the joy that is living your very best lyfe. OUTFIT RECIPE: 1 x Bassike Jeans, 1 x COH beaded bag, 1 x Rag & Bone white t-shirt, 1 x COH plaid scrunchie, 1 x Reliquia gold hoops = Daaaaaaayum, gurl! Make Like Jeanne Damas, Add A Heel/Blazer Omotesando A post shared by Jeanne (@jeannedamas) on Apr 18, 2018 at 6:03am PDT Today, in the land of denim, we’re going by retiring our favourite pair of sneakers in favour of a heel/blazer instead, all thanks to the most stylish lady in all of Paris, Jeanne Damas. Make like the style kween and add a graphic tee, a pinstripe blazer and flared jeans to give it that deriguour effortlessness inherent in the way french women dress. OUTFIT RECIPE: 1 x Re/Done flared jeans, 1 x Tommy Jeans logo t-shirt, 1 x Mink Pink stripe blazer, 1 x Matiko block heel pump = Oooh, La La! Opt For An All-White Look Don’t forget to do your squats A post shared by CARMEN HAMILTON (@carmengracehamilton) on Aug 10, 2018 at 3:58am PDT There’s just something so badass about wearing an all-white outfit. It’s like, I understand the risk of wearing all-white, especially in the company of clumsy friends and red wine, but I’m willing to go out on a limb anyway to look this F-A-B. Opt for a high-waisted fit and a cropped white t-shirt in a light, breezy fabric to ensure that it looks flattering, and add a pop of colour with a head scarf and/or leopard print belt. Voila! OUTFIT RECIPE: 1 x Hanes x Karla cropped t-shirt, 1 x Grlfrnd white jeans, 1 x GANNI kitten heel, 1 x ASOS leopard head scarf = Did it hurt when you fell? What’s your favourite way to jazz up your jeans and a t-shirt combination? Words, Madeleine Woon The post 3 Ways To Dress Up Your ‘Jeans And A T-Shirt’ Combo appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. Flip-Flops Are Officially Back! Here’s How To Wear Them There’s been whispers circulating on the internet for a while that flip-flops were set to make their triumphant, rubbery return. And, now, blisters and uncomfy shoe trend-related calluses can let out a collective sigh of relief, because that day is finally upon us. We’re calling it: flip-flops are *officially* the sandal of summer. How does that make you feel? Flip-flops (known as ‘thongs’ here Down Under) have gently nudged the humble slide out as the new repurposed pool shoe favoured by the street style masses. It was only a matter of time, given that we’ve burnt through pretty much every other nineties and noughties trend in existence, from shell anklets to the ubiquitous slip dress.  My feet aren’t mad about this, TBH. Flip-flops can add an edge to an otherwise feminine outfit, and when paired with the right pieces, will make your outfit look unexpected and chic. Most importantly, they’re comfy af. If you’re going to try this at home, remember that a pedicure is an absolutely non-negotiable accompaniment to your rubbery friends. Asking For A Friend: How To *Actually* Get Rid Of Coldsores When I was younger, cold sores (almost successfully) set out to ruin my social life. They had this adorable little habit of arriving on the eve of school photo days, camps, sleepovers and school socials. It caused me great stress—which, as you will know if you’re afflicted with the virus, is a major trigger itself. Lose, lose situation. Over the years, I became very proficient at fighting cold sores. While my disdain for them never waned, I would almost wish them into existence, so I could go into battle with them and emerge victorious. I tried and tested every single trick and wives tale under the cold sore-inducing sun—some exacerbated the situation, some became loyal allies in my the endless fight to destroy them. As I sailed through my late teens and early twenties, their visits lessened, which I think can mainly be credited to Lysine and Zinc consumption, and the upswing in my SPF+ game. I can count on two hands the amount of coldsores I’ve had in the past decade (thankfully, since they don’t really seem to have a place in an adult’s world). Largely the triggers remained the same—hormones running rampant, burning the candle at both ends, fatigue setting in—but the list also grew to include such things as: drinking too much alcohol. After two years of living life blissfully devoid of a lip friend, I woke up to a small blister forming on my lower lip last week. Joy! Luckily, my +1 was modest in size and positioned in such a place so as to be mostly obscured from the harsh gaze of the general public. Still not ideal, considering the timing was pretty much the adult equivalent of getting one on the morning of school photo day. Let me set the scene: intimate afternoon gathering, me and my cold sore, my ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Cute-meet! I got onto the CS swiftly enough that by the time I was saying my awkward hellos, you could barely see it (especially with the help of my good friend, lip gloss). Still, it reminded me that many people are still out there trying to fight the good fight against them. And so, I give you, my full-proof guide to murdering your next coldsore… BUY FAMVIR IMMEDIATELY   This is a true ~life changer~. I’m not sure why no one told me about it sooner (???), but ‘better late than never’ applies all the same. You should always consult your doctor/pharmacist before taking new medications (obvs), but according to this handy site, they’re an “antiviral medicine used to treat recurrent outbreaks of cold sores in adults 18 years of age and over who have a normal immune system.” The best results are yielded if you get onto it straight away. Honestly, I’ve had coldsores just straight up disappear after taking famvir, so I recommend sprinting to the chemist as soon as the symptoms of a cold sore present—such as tingling, itching or burning, or the appearance of the first signs, such as redness or swelling. This is when the virus is reproducing rapidly. SWITCH UP YOUR DIET This time around, I went on a militant anti-cold sore diet. Basically, you want to eat foods that are rich in Lysine and low in Arginine, and ones that will boost your immune system. A diet rich in the amino acid lysine and low in the amino acid arginine may help control coldsore outbreaks. Also, avoid overly spicy and acidic foods, with anecdotal evidence suggesting it may worsen symptoms. Below, a guide to the foods you should be treating your tum to, and those that you should avoid with the same dedication as you do your ex. Eat: yogurt, most cheese, apples, eggs, mangoes, apricots, pears, fish, green tea, echinacea and shitake mushrooms Avoid: processed foods, refined flour, refined sugar, chocolate, oats, most nuts, most seeds, beef, beer and coffee (I know, that last one particularly sucks) STOCK UP ON VITAMINS Take the following for prevention and to help with healing: Vitamin C, Zinc, and Lysine (which suppresses argenine, an element that helps viral cells reproduce). Also, I recently found out that a b12 deficiency can trigger coldsore outbreaks (and, you know, make you super sleepy all the time), so it might be worth getting your b12 levels checked. LEAN ON HOME REMEDIES/ANTIVIRALS  Apply ice to the affected area immediately to reduce swelling—if you get onto it asap, and use ice in conjunction with other attacks, it can be truly ~game changing~. I’ve personally never gelled with Zovirax cream, but I think the COMPEED coldsore patches work really well, in that they speed up the healing process so much, and the coldsores are much less painful/obtrusive/visible as a result. 10/10 recommend. HYDRATE AND CATCH SOME ZZZ’s Fatigue triggers outbreaks, so try and ensure that you’re hitting your daily sleep targets. When you have a coldsore, it’s generally a sign that your immune system ain’t doing so well, so in order to boost it—sleep as much as you can, and when you’re awake, make BFFs with your water bottle. Charlotte Groeneveld for Thefashionguitar wearing Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 runway dress

Okay, I’m not going to lie; most dresses that qualify as “dream dress” to me, are expensive. Even on sale they are not most likely to be out of my budget, but a girl can dream. So I’m dreaming. Yet, on the other end of the spectrum, there are dresses, especially when they are on sale, that are lifting every spirit in my body without breaking the bank. Trust me on this one, I know what I’m talking about… I’ve a wedding in Italy next week, AND the Venice Film Festival coming up, so I’ve done my research. Read more to see all the best dress on sale, and my “princess experience” in Paris during the Chanel Cruise show back in May 2018…

Needless to say, the Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 runway dress I’m wearing in this post is one of the most exquisite ones I’ve ever worn. It’s not mine, and I’m not making a secret it. The brands I work with – like Chanel in this case – dress me when they invite me to their shows and events. It’s an amazing opportunity for me to wear the latest collection – a dream I had when I started my blog, and is still a dream every single time I wear one of the most beautiful pieces – and as well to show you how to wear runway in “real life” and get inspired by the style. So to make this thing interested for all of you – big spenders or small – here’s the most insane list of dresses I dream of having in my wardrobe. Starting with the designer ones, which are also ALL ON SALE NOW…

Dana Boulos On Crappy Hair Cuts And Keeping Motivated “My advice for aspiring directors is start making work ASAP! If you’re interested in directing, grab a notebook, write down ideas, talk to your friends, and see who would be interested in working with you on bringing those stories to life. Nothing great ever came easy so keep working hard. I took a course in high school for cinematography and fell in love with directing. I directed my first music video for a friend of mine which premiered in Noisy. Directing is all I want to do in life. You have to shoot consistently if you want to make it your profession. Even when I go through hell, I keep going. No one or thing will ever stop me! I have an agenda book—I write everything that I need to get done per week in it, but I still make time for my loved ones.” “…I dyed my hair for the first time recently and it just got completely ruined. I went to a hair salon to get a more natural colour but the hair stylist made it black. I liked it for the first two weeks, but the more I brushed my hair, the more hair started to fall out, so I grabbed scissors and cut it all off. I’m growing it back naturally and never dying my hair again [laughs]! It has changed the way I dress—I feel like I wear more low-cut shirts and dresses now.” “…Arrow Dewilde is the most stylish, daring and magical human on this planet. I haven’t seen such power, style and attitude in a long, long time—I love it! My style definitely has been influenced by my upbringing. My mother and I traveled a lot to see my family who moved from Lebanon to Europe during the war. I don’t follow any trends. I tend to love vintage pieces that are futuristic, classic and daring. Fashion to me means dressing in whatever the hell you want! You make the rules :)” Instagram @danaboulos | Photographer @kristenjanwong The post Dana Boulos On Crappy Hair Cuts And Keeping Motivated appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. Jai Kaldor

5 Aussie Designers Are Selling Their Fave Vintage Pieces RN Do you want the good news or the great news first? Ok, we’ll start with the good—you can now sell your luxury treasures on Vestiaire Collective here in Australia. Yay! And, the great news? To kick things off, five of your favourite designers—Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning of P.E NATION, Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs, Alice McCall, and Michelle Glew-Ross of My General Store—have parted ways with some fab gems from their personal and brand archives, which are available for you to shop now below.  And, the good news just keeps rollin’. All the proceeds from this one-of-a-kind collection will be donated to Fashion Revolution—a not-for-profit global movement which aims to radically change the way our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed. Hear more about the designers’ thoughts on sustainability and personal style, among other things, and then shop their favourite archival pieces below.  Get in, angels, we’re going shopping for a good cause… Michelle Glew-Ross, My General Store On what she’s donating: “The collection that I am donating is a mix of clothes and shoes that have been special to me at some point in time, or pieces that I just did not wear enough. I look forward to the pieces being used again with new owners.” On how often she updates her wardrobe: “I believe in buying quality over quantity. I try to buy well-made classic styles that will last for years to come. I generally add two or three new pieces a season that can either be new or vintage pieces. I find this is enough to be able to mix up my current wardrobe and continue wearing everything. On sustainability:  “[Sustainability] is something that we all need to be aware of. The effect that fast fashion is having on our environment is extremely apparent. Recycling clothing, consuming less, buying quality over quantity are some of the best ways we can help.” Shop her wardrobe: My General Store Striped Shirt, My General Store Striped Pants, Proenza Schouler Dress, Céline Leather Slides Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning, P.E Nation On what they’re donating: “We are both so lucky to have direct access to fashion every day, the downside is having too much and feeling overwhelmed by our wardrobes. It’s essential for our minds (and our homes!) to clear out the wardrobes regularly. It is therapy for us, like a mini detox. Choosing the pieces to remove is always hard, a bit of a push/pull in the sense that you don’t need it anymore but you still really love it… like many of the pieces we have donated.” On how often they update their wardrobes:  “At P.E Nation we’re always working on new product from wear testing to new development and deliveries, we’re continually adding in pieces to complement our wider wardrobe which we update monthly to coincide with our product dropping in to store. We always style back with P.E Nation and constantly keep a look out for that key piece that will elevate our active-streetwear looks. To make room, we also give away a lot of product and donate from our wardrobes as much as possible.” On sustainability:  “Every day this topic is becoming more and more important to us. As a business, we are looking at ways to become more responsible in every aspect of our operations. Personally, we love and draw inspiration from second hand and vintage shopping – garment shapes and colours, the history, the culture and the time these pieces represent are the cornerstone of many creative processes in the fashion industry.” Shop their wardrobes: Dion Lee Silk Blazer, P.E Nation Jacket Alice McCall On her favourite place to shop vintage IRL:  “I love doing my vintage shopping in Los Angeles. My favorite vintage store in LA is called The Way We Wore and I just love its owner, Doris. The Stella McCartney jacket and the Marc Jacobs midi dress, for instance, come from there.” On her personal style:  “Effortless but chic at the same time. I like wearing a bit of 1970’s boho denim with a designer pair of shoes—I live granny chic style, i.e my Gucci loafers with a pair of bobby sock.” On sustainability:  “I try to be as sustainable as possible in every aspect of my life and design keepsake pieces.” Shop her wardrobe: Stella McCartney jacket, Marc Jacobs midi dress, Non Signé jumper, Alice McCall dress Louise Olsen, Dinosaur Designs On her personal style:  “I think I’m pretty classic with a twist. I love masculine tailoring balanced with a certain femininity.” On sustainability:  “Sustainability is very important to me. The amount of clothes that end up as landfill is appalling. It is so damaging on so many levels to our environment.” On fashion vs. functionality:  “Both, but mostly function with an eye for what I believe to be beautiful. As Yves Saint-Laurent said, ‘Fashion fades, style is eternal’.” Shop her wardrobe: Silver Burberry Coat, Louise Olsen earrings, Dinosaur Designs bracelets You can shop the entire collection here. *This post was made in collaboration with Vesiaire Collective The post 5 Aussie Designers Are Selling Their Fave Vintage Pieces RN appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. The Ultimate Guide To Shanghai We recently found ourselves in Shanghai, the land of lush parks, crazy skyline views, delish dumplings, and cute lantern-adorned backstreets. The main reason for us heading over there was for Michael Kors’ Fall 18 press day—if you’re wondering what they means, basically we were one of the lucky few who got to preview of the label’s brand spanking new collection (what a time to be alive!). And, we were so enamoured by what we saw that we decided to take some of the collection out for a spin while exploring the ~bustling~ city. With the Michael Kors Quilted Leather Bag housing all our goods, and dressed in some of our favourite trends of the moment—think vibrant reds, chunky knits, romantic florals and tartan—we hit the streets of Shanghai.  Time was certainly of the essence for us—this time around, we only had just over 24-hours to soak up all the city has to offer (and there’s lots). So what do you do when you find yourself in one of the world’s largest cities with less than a day’s free time to spare? Read on for our ultimate guide to Shanghai, frands! Carmen wears Michael Kors Fall ’18 The Best Place To Get Coffee… Let’s kick off with arguably the most important travel tip on the agenda: where to get good coffee. Beginning the day with a mediocre coffee is a real mood deflator—take it from us—so finding your local for the day is of big importance (huge!). Insert Seesaw Cafe. If you want a coffee that lives up to Australia’s high (read: snobby) standards, then this little gem is the place 2 be. The ambience is ~on-point~, the latte art is museum-worthy and it’s a cosy, friendly place to make some new friends (or, you know, just indulge in some good ol’ fashioned people-watching). Other good places to get sufficiently caffeinated are Twosome Coffee and The Press by Inno Coffee (advised you also opt to have your cake and eat it too here). Carmen wears Michael Kors Fall ’18 Brunch Spots To While Away The Morning In… Egg is a super sun-drenched little cafe to live your best brunch life in, with all ya go-to options on the menu including granola, breakfast bowls and b&e rolls. Mmm *drools*. Mito (which moonlights as a casual Italian-style bar and eatery at night) is also a good option, although it’s only open on weekends. If You’re After A Lighter Lunch… While it’s kinda tempting to really lean into the dumplings vibe for every meal, if you’re after something a bit easier on the tum, then Element Fresh makes a mean salad, as does SproutWorks (their acai is also worth a try, too). Little Catch will satisfy all your Poke bowl desires, and Green & Safe is your one-stop-shop for fresh/organic produce (with a lit little cafe also attached). Carmen wears Michael Kors Fall ’18 If You’re Looking For Something A Bit More Substantial… Let’s be real, salad ain’t always gonna cut it in the food department (especially when you’re in holiday mode), so thank god Mercato exists. Set in the super *posh* Bund area, the rustic and vibey restaurant will make all your pizza/cocktail dreams come true—especially if you like a margarita and spicy margarita combo deal (so all of us, no?). The Best Dumplings Can Be Found At… Eat like a local at Din Tai Fung, or if you’re after a side of history with your dumplings, Dahuchun sits on the cutest lil’ street lined with lanterns and ornaments, and has super delish dumplings (order sets of six or 10 from the counter). For A Spot Of Culture, Head To… The M50 art district is home to a heap of modern and contemporary Chinese art galleries, all situated in super kewl industrial surroundings. You can peep the *infamous* Shanghai graffiti wall, see up-and-coming Chinese artists’ work set amidst restored factories, and there’s a lot of cheap (or free) exhibitions! Did we mention it’s super kewl? Get A Drink At… If you’re after a chill drank, The Bunker has a super fun vibe and there’s a substantial cocktail and whisky list. If you’re looking to ~let your hair down~, then head straight to m1nt nightclub—it’s located on the top floor of a skyscraper near the Bund area, there’s actual shark tanks inside (!), and they play all ur favourite house music/R&B hits. Get (Purposely) Lost In… The French Concession area is cute as a button, and it’s highly recommended you stroll through its quaint lil’ backstreets (many Instagrammable moments await!). Tianzifang is also a really cute area, with cool bars, cafes, crafts shops, design studios, galleries and boutiques. The post The Ultimate Guide To Shanghai appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. 3 Fail-Safe Work Outfits To Fall Back On According to my calculations, if you work full-time you’ll be required to throw together around 240 office-appropriate lewks per year. If you’re anything like moi, a good many of these days will be spent sitting on your bedroom floor, surrounded by a mish mash of clothes that don’t quite work, wondering what in the flip you’re going to wear. Or basically, this scene in Clueless.  Finding an outfit that won’t land you in hot water with HR, but that will also ensure you don’t fall asleep when you look in the mirror isn’t the easiest of tasks. As such, I’ve come to lean heavily on these three fail-safe outfits that ~do it all~. Acquaint yourself with the reliable office-appropriate outfit recipes below… @mariabernad Suit Yourself  Suits are an absolute work-appropriate godsend. Other than bringing us one step closer to our dreams of becoming Diane Keaton, they’re flattering, easy to throw on, and will make you look equal parts ‘cool’ and ‘put together’. No easy feat.  SPLURGE: For a casual suit, Ganni is your ticket. I’m almost certain that this pink and orange checked blazer and trousers made an appearance during one of my many ‘what fabulous clothes will I wear as an adult’ themed day-dreaming sessions as a child. And now I get to live out that dream! *Wipes away a single, solitary tear.* If you want to head in a more classic direction, this Tagliatore suit will get you there, as will this SEA checked blazer and trousers. SAVE: If you’re looking for a more cost-effective option, this very on-trend pastel pink Topshop suit jacket and matching pants will make your Monday morning infinitely cheerier, or for a more subtle corporate-friendly iteration, you *simply cannot* look past this ASOS tailored suit. STYLE WITH: If your dress code is chill, dress the suit down with a cute graphic t-shirt and a pair of chunky Balenciaga sneakers (see here for a less $$$ option). And, if your workplace leans more towards the corporate than it does the casj, wear it with a pair of strappy heels and either a turtleneck or silk cami, pending what your schedule and the weather are up to that day.  WEEKEND OPTION: If you’re looking to repurpose your suit for brunch/drinks on the weekend, simply do as Maria Bernad has and throw on these Reliquia gold hoops, a low-key pair of heels, a statement belt and cat-eye sunglasses for the chicest lewk this side of NYFW. @jeannedamas That’s A Wrap If you’re after something a bit softer than a suit, nothing beats a wrap dress, bucket bag and block-heel combo. Nothing! A wrap dress will keep your boss happy, and is cute enough to then wear to dinner at your partner’s parents house after work. Or you know, to drinks with your gal pals. Or you know, to the movies. Or you know, literally anywhere. You get my drift. SPLURGE: For all those who work in creative fields, this Diane Von Furstenberg polka dot dress perfectly encapsulates the mood of the in-between seasons (especially when paired with these Tony Bianco white boots). For those whose d-code is a bit more rigid, this satin HOPE dress should do the trick! SAVE: This Reformation dress promises to be your new work wife. And, if you want a side dish, this green floral ASOS midi dress has got your back (literally). STYLE WITH: Wrap dresses are best served with a side of block heel (like these Mansur Gavriel ones, for instance), and a bucket bag (this Staud one has your workplace written all over it). WEEKEND OPTION: Sub out your heel and roll with an espadrille instead for a simple-yet-impactful lewk, or go for a fresh pair of sneakers for a brunch-approps option. @sabinasocol Midi Skirts Are Ur New BFF  Silk midi skirts are the new jeans IMO, in that they can be worn every single day and look good with everything. While the pictured Réalisation Par skirt probably wouldn’t fly with the stricter office dress codes, it still serves as a good reminder that silk midi skirts should feature highly in your transeasonal wardrobe. Set those calves free! SPLURGE: I’m one more ‘amazing silk skirt-based outfit pic on Instagram’ away from purchasing this Chosen silk skirt. If black isn’t your vibe, this Lee Mathews emerald green number is TDF (to die for), as is this Theory silk skirt (which comes in pale pink and light green, mmmm). SAVE: The cost-per-wear potential on this THE ICONIC satin skirt should have your bank account salivating. And, be sure to keep the good times rolling for ol’ bankaroony with this Witchery printed silk midi skirt. STYLE WITH: A white blouse or turtleneck, a pair of kitten heels and a simple pair of pearl earrings. WEEKEND OPTION: Nothing looks as fresh as a silk midi skirt, a pair of strappy sandals and a white t-shirt does! The post 3 Fail-Safe Work Outfits To Fall Back On appeared first on CHRONICLES OF HER. Where To Splurge And Save In Your Makeup Bag Given the struggles I’ve had with assembling a makeup bag over the years, you’d think I was trying to build a MTV Cribs-worthy mansion with my bare hands. My modus operandi during my teenage years was to pile that shit on with great passion (and in generous quantities), but my beauty bag always felt incomplete or imbalanced—blush, no blush brush to apply with; four mascaras, all clumpy and unusable. That kinda thing. Then, in my late teens and early twenties I gave up on makeup altogether. After that became a total bore, I started experimenting with makeup, but only in my nighttime lewks. After my brief dalliance working in the beauty industry, I decided I’d only like to use expensive makeup, thank you very much, even though there was better, more affordable options available.  I think I’ve recently hit my stride, though. I look down on my makeup bag now with the kind of pride I imagine my Mum felt every time I came home with a report card that didn’t besmirch me as some kind of hell-raising, back-chatting classroom demon. These days my bag seems to take its inspiration from my favourite podcast, The High Low, in that it acknowledges that the best makeup assemblage is one built with products spanning all different price ranges. It scrimps where it can, although it has retained its refined palette (often literally) where it deems fit. Expensive doesn’t always equal best, it has concluded. While I’m sure there are greater joys in life, finding really inexpensive products that light up your face like a Christmas tree surely must come close.  If you’re looking to ~strike a balance~ with your beauty bag, I invite you to take a peek into mine below… MIDWEIGHT: PRIMER I’ve come to see primer as the pre-drinks of my makeup routine—i.e. a very important rite of passage. After washing my face (with a combination of Dermalogica Microfoliant and Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel) and slathering on serum and moisturiser (Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream), I like to prep my epidermis with a few spritzes of M.A.C Prep + Prime Fix + before applying my makeup, and then once I’m done, I douse myself one more time to set everything. It’s incredibly hydrating, and at $36, I’m not sure it constitutes a save nor a splurge, so I will offer up some alternatives below: For a true splurge that gives SPF50, the Giorgio Armani Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer is great, and if you’re looking to pinch pennies, this The Ordinary primer is an AMAZING lightweight primer that won’t leave any residual oil/will prep your skin right up for a flawless makeup lewk. SPLURGE: CONCEALER I’m not sure if this a controversial standpoint, but lately I’ve been thinking a lot about ye’ old concealer, and how much of a difference it really makes (especially when you hit your late twenties, and your face, with special regard to your under-eye area, starts to betray how little sleep you’ve had and how many wines you’ve guzzled the night prior). It took my a long while to get here, but I can now say that I worship at the altar of concealers, and am therefore willing to fork out the cash for a good one. Nothing beats YSL’s Touch Eclat in my opinzzz. SPLURGE: FOUNDATION When it comes to foundation, I don’t mess around. In my humble opinion,  skin should be the main feature of every makeup look, and so it’s ~imperative~ that you get it right. I personally prefer to go for a more dewy foundation—since my skin is of the pale and prone-to-desert-like dryness—and I love (like, that obsessive teenager type of love) the Tom Ford Traceless Foundation. Carmen’s fave is Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh, and I can confirm that her skin always looks… okay (jks, it looks annoyingly good all the time), and Georgie’s fave is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser. Again, annoyingly good skin. If you’re after a more mattifying foundation, the Fenty Beauty Longwear Foundation looks incredible on super hydrated skin. SAVE: POWDER For years, my favourite FAVOURITE ever product was M.A.C blot powder. It was the ultimate club-hopping compadre, especially in summer when sweaty dance floors led to a near-permanent forehead sheen. If you’re oily/prone to unwanted shine, I still hype it. These days, though, I am perfectly content with a drugstore alternative so I can spend my cash elsewhere (not at the club, it would seem). The Rimmel Stay Matte Powder is my makeup bag friend. It’s not a product I’d stop people on the street to tell about by any means, but it certainly gets the job done. SPLURGE: LIPSTICK I saw Carmen Hamilton wearing Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Paint On Liquid Lipcolor so I wore Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Paint On Liquid Lipcolor. But seriously, this is definitely worth your $$$. The Lava Flow is the perfect shade of red, it will stay on all night, and it’s perfectly pigmented. I find with cheaper lipsticks, they either aren’t durable or the colour just doesn’t quiiiite get there.  SAVE: MASCARA A good mascara is all in the brush, not the price tag. I’ve used probably a hundred or so mascaras in my life, and while I agree with Georgie’s claim that Bobbi Brown Everything is good, I’ll always hit up my local drugstore when a mascara runs out. My favourite cheapy is the Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express. People will confuse you for a giraffe erry single time. SAVE: BLUSH My BFF recently brought me back the Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff from Canada, and I finally understand the hype around it. I feel like an actual doll when I wear it—it’s the prettiest shade, and since it was a present and therefore free, an absolute save. If it’s not your birthday, it’s technically still a good cost-effective option, coming in at $18USD. Call in some favours from your international friends if you live over this side of the world, or enlist a third party delivery service to help get it in yo’ life. SPLURGE: BRONZER My face has found out the hard way what a bad bronzer can do to it (think: tragic), so I’m not opposed to spending a lil’ more to get a sun-kissed result. My absolute ride or die bronzer is the Hourglass Ambient lighting bronzer, which is like a bronzer AND a highlighter. Talk about money well spent, huh. SPLURGE: EYESHADOW When it comes to eyeshadow, I like to fork out a little extra for ones with higher quality pigments because they a) look better, and b) last longer. I also am a big fan of palettes, despite my often-crippling indecisiveness, and love the Too Faced Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Collection. It’s definitely worth the extra cashola, ‘cause there are so many cute colours to choose from, pending the vibe you’re going for that day.  SAVE: LIQUID EYELINER  Personally, I don’t understand why people would spend much more than $20 on liquid eyeliner. This Revlon ColorStay eyeliner is the perfect option for an eyeliner that will stay put all day—the wand makes application super easy, especially if you’re trying out a cat-eye lewk and it’s not patchy at all. Two thumbs up from moi. MIDWEIGHT: HIGHLIGHTER The whole COH team swears by the Mecca Cosmetica Enlightened From Within Illuminating Balm. It’s super lush, glossy, glow-y and looks super natural. Part of its beauty is its size—you can pack it to reapply on the go! Now that I’ve essentially laid my soul bare to you, I ask only one favour in return. What are your favourite splurge and save products? Let’s build an MTV Cribs-worthy makeup bag together in the comments below. Emma Rowen Rose On How Living In Milan Changed Her Style Can you give us the Emma Rowen Rose elevator pitch? I’m Emma Rowen Rose. I’m a 21-year-old fashion designer, founder and creative director of the brand Rowen Rose. I also model a lot, design for other brands, style, and write! What would you say are the biggest influences on your style? Do you think living in Italy has influenced the way you dress? Art is my biggest inspiration. For my everyday style, it’s quite instinctive. And yes, absolutely. I became way more feminine, and daring, and colourful. Italy has been a real influence/inspiration for me. What are the 3-6 items in your wardrobe that you couldn’t be without? Too difficult—I need everything and more. Mostly, my luxury vintage pieces, good jeans, a beautiful dress and my vintage earrings from the 70s. Best beauty hacks you’ve learnt along the way? If you don’t have gel to pull your hair back, use water and soap for the same result. You can do it in any restaurant bathroom. First style memory? My favourite movie as a child was Les Demoiselles de Rochefort by Jacques Demy (I still adore it). The styling is stunning, and it’s super 60s and colorful. I was obsessed. Barcelona with Need Supply

via Wide Eyed Legless https://ift.tt/2M8E1Hq

“Barcelona, perhaps more than any city in the world, feels as if it sprouted and grew from the earth beneath it. Its monumentally organic spaces, a pan-stylistic architecture from nature-inspired designers that run the gamut from Gaudí to Gehry, emphasizes curves, imperfection, and tactility rather than the mix
of classical façades and rectilinear Modernist blocks of other European cities.”

Ahhhh, Barcelona. Her curves, her light, her willingness to pull you in and make you her own. A city as captivating as any I have traveled to and yet somehow distinctly its own. If only I had the exact words to explain what I meant, so instead I set out to capture this exact essence for  Need Supply on my recent trip there.

I wanted to find a way to visually show this push and pull that I felt while walking her streets. Nature becoming architecture, and architecture taking on a more organic form. This visual tension lends its self to a more care-free air: the overgrown lush greenery, and architecture with curves as if to mimic the air itself. I was utterly captivated by this wild and slightly eerie nature.

Favorites in the city (both architecture and food):

La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Batllo, Parc de la Ciutadella, Parc del Laberint d’Horta, Casa Mila, Satan coffee corner, Nomad coffee, Black Remedy,  Federal Cafe, Mercado Boqueria (make sure to eat at El Quim), Picasso museum, Miro Fondation, Bar Canete, Sensi Tapas, Bar Mut, Bicnic, Tapas 24
