Inconceivable: in defence of childfree women like me

https://ift.tt/2GFJRvB

Author Sam George-Allen is feeling singled out. She's about to turn 30, pays no attention to her biological clock and has had it with society telling her motherhood is the defining feature of womanhood

I’m about to turn thirty, and I still don’t want children. As I near the stage of life at which mainstream culture would have me believe the ticking of my biological clock is supposed to become so loud as to drive me insane (and then to the fertility clinic), all I feel is a profound relief that I’ve made it this far without giving in to the absurd pressure placed on young women to have a baby.

It’s not often that one encounters a childless woman depicted in a positive light, at least as far as popular culture and conversation go. From fairytales (where childless queens plot to murder their beautiful stepdaughters) to The Simpsons (poor Patty and Selma, those hairy-legged, lizard-loving objects of ridicule) to the enduring trope of the murderous un-mother (looking at you, Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction), childless women are constructed in culture as child-hating, monstrous, deviant, selfish, unfeminine and evil.

Conversations about women who are voluntarily childless – or, as many now choose to self-identify, “childfree” – are where the most ugly, retrograde and sexist ideas about women’s bodies show themselves most visibly. The stigma and derision directed at childfree women demonstrates that deep down, much of our culture remains convinced of an old and dangerous notion – that to be a woman is, necessarily, to be a mother. A woman’s other achievements, her talents, her generosity towards others, her creativity, her leadership, all pale in comparison to her monstrous, voluntary barrenness. The idea of a woman choosing herself over her (non-existent) children is simply inconceivable.

It’s a tired, regressive social norm that for some reason has remained largely unexamined until recently. But, like so many regressive social norms, the myth of mandatory motherhood makes people miserable.

The tone of media coverage when it comes to publicly visible childfree women swings from sniggering innuendo to paternalistic pity – poor Jennifer Aniston, whose preternatural beauty and eye-popping wealth must be no compensation for the family (it’s implied) she’ll never be whole without.

childfree women

Getty Images

Then there are the multitudinous ordinary women who have neither wealth nor fame to serve as insulator between their carefully-made choices and the well-meaning relatives or gabby taxi drivers or patronising doctors, who all repeat variations on the same, tired theme: You’ll change your mind.

Is there anything more paternalistic, infantilising, infuriating, than someone wagging their finger at you, eyes a-sparkle, and blithely implying that you, a grown, adult woman, have the self-awareness of a sea cucumber? You’ll change your mind. As if, in a birth-obsessed culture, we’ve had the luxury of not thinking about it. As if our choice to remain childless – our active, pill-taking, IUD-inserting, condom-purchasing choice – is a mere whim.

The pressure to reproduce comes from all directions, and more than anything it serves to remind women – all women, childfree or not – that their worth can be reduced to nothing more than their capacity for breeding. It’s the slippery flipside to outright denying women reproductive rights – we tie motherhood to feminine identity so closely, hector and cajole and threaten and coerce women towards parenthood with such determination, that for many it becomes almost impossible to resist.

But research has shown that, compared to both mothers and involuntarily childless women, childfree women ‘show higher levels of overall well-being, rate themselves as more autonomous… and are less likely to have a child-related regret.’ Because while people will endlessly tell you that you’ll regret not having children, no-one ever seems to ask if you’re sure you won’t regret having them. In fact according to research last year, single, unmarried woman were the happiest subgroup of the population.

There’s no doubt that motherhood is profoundly satisfying and fulfilling for millions of women the world over. But the way we treat women who decide not to follow that path is the last holdout of uninterrogated, open sexism, and it’s exhausting. It’s time we recognise the childfree woman as what she really is: a human being. No more selfish, deviant, unfeminine or wicked than the next – just a person who’s made a choice, just like any other.

Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness brand Goop is criticised by NHS chief

https://ift.tt/2GItv5m

Gwyneth Paltrow’s alternative wellness brand, Goop, has been controversial (to say the least) since its inception. Vagina candles, jade eggs, vampire repellent sprays – if you take a look at the website, you’ll see a broad range of products for an ‘open-minded, and service-centric approach’ to wellness.

It has been branded ‘dangerous’ on several occasions, and Goop was fined $145,000 in 2018 in civil penalties for ‘unsubstantiated’ marketing claims.

And this month, Gwyneth’s empire expanded. She landed a Netflix series, The Goop Lab, exploring the company’s work and giving viewers an insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

However, NHS chief Sir Simon Stevens was speaking at an event in Oxford this week and spoke about the new show, calling out the claims behind some of the alternative products and treatments.

Via The Guardian, he is reported to have said: ‘Myths and misinformation have been put on steroids by the availability of misleading claims online.

‘Now we have dubious wellness products and dodgy procedures available on the web. Fresh from controversies over jade eggs and unusually scented candles, Goop has just popped up with a new TV series, in which Gwyneth Paltrow and her team test vampire facials and back a ‘bodyworker’ who claims to cure both acute psychological trauma and side-effects by simply moving his hands two inches above a customer’s body.

‘Gwyneth Paltrow’s brand peddles ‘psychic vampire repellent’; says ‘chemical sunscreen is a bad idea’; and promotes colonic irrigation and DIY coffee enema machines, despite them carrying considerable risks to health and NHS advice clearly stating there is ‘no scientific evidence to suggest there are any health benefits associated with colonic irrigation.’

A Goop spokesperson has since responded, stating: ‘Goop takes efficacy and product claims very seriously.

‘When products are available for retail sale, we have a robust legal and compliance team that works closely with our science and research group to vet product claims.’

The key trends I'm stealing from Copenhagen Fashion Week

https://ift.tt/2uOyuyz

With Copenhagen Fashion Week wrapping up today, I’m looking to those Scandi streets for a bit of style inspiration for the season ahead, and as always, you can truly rely on designers such as GANNI, Cecilie Bahnsen and Baum & Pferdgarten to set the trends.

Baby blue

L: Cecilie Bahnsen. R: Baum & Pferdgarten

If you thought pastels were just for spring, you’re wrong. For autumn/winter 2020, it seems like baby blue is the colour du jour. Cecilie Bahnsen took inspiration from the landscape Martina Hoogland-Ivanow took in the north of Russia for her show, translating it into delicate dresses mixed in with chunkier wool, and outerwear that blends the lines between masculinity and femininity. As for the hues, it was all about browns and sky blues. Over at Baum & Pferdgarten, the soft colour was everywhere too.

Practical dressing

L: GANNI. R: By Malene Birger

AW20 is all about pairing back and investing in no-fuss pieces that you’ll be able to wear every day. At GANNI, this translated into uniform-like utilitarian sleeveless blazers alongside slouchier offerings, like a tweed grandad blazer and trousers styled with oversized shirts. At By Malene Birger, there was plenty of oversized knitwear, paired with leather trousers and more tailored coats.

Quilted coats

It’s time to dust off your old Barbour jacket, because quilted coats are back in a big way if the chic show attendees are to be believed. I love this butter yellow take on the trend, but I also spotted more wearable brown and black duffle coats.

Colourful leather

Leather, whether real or faux, has been big news on the catwalks for the past couple of seasons, and it’s not going away anytime soon. For the Copenhagen Fashion Week shows, the street style set opted for bold colours such as pink, green and blue over the more classic shades of caramel and browns.

Sustainability

Whilst not technically a trend, it’s important to talk about sustainability, and it’s a subject Copenhagen Fashion Week is taking very seriously indeed. It unveiled an ambitious three-year plan to ensure its brands are taking action against the climate crisis.

It is the first fashion week to reduce its environmental impact, with single-use plastic bottles already banned, and operational carbon emissions are being offset, whilst the ultimate goal is to be zero waste by 2023. It is also looking at banning plastic hangers by 2021.

Copenhagen Fashion Week is also asking all of its brands to comply with sustainability standards. By 2023, all its designers should comply with 17 minimum standards, which include zero waste set designs, using at least 50 per cent certified organic, upcycled or recycled textiles in all collections and pledging not to destroy unsold clothes.

Certain brands are already leading the way, with Baum & Pferdgarten producing an AW20 collection that is over 50% sustainable, whilst GANNI is using reworked pieces as part of their pop-up this year.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are asking for 'kindness'

The world has been watching Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s every move since they announced that they would be stepping back as ‘senior royals’ earlier this month. The couple shared the news that they would be splitting their time between the UK and Canada going forward and are currently overseas with their son, baby Archie Harrison.

Harry spoke about their decision at a recent dinner for his charity, Sentebale, revealing that ‘there was no other option’ but to resign, and the Queen has offered her support for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, saying in a statement: ‘Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family… I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.’

Now, Harry and Meghan are asking for ‘kindness’ in their latest Instagram post.

Despite losing their HRH titles and their ability to ‘formally represent The Queen’, they assured the public that they are committed to their charity work and raising awareness for causes that are important to them. Harry has been involved with mental health campaigns, starting the Heads Together charity with Prince William and Kate Middleton, and now the Sussexes are supporting the Bell Let’s Talk campaign which highlights the importance of kindness.

Bell Canada is a Canadian phone network and the campaign is encouraging people to reach out to loved ones to check in on them.

Taking to Instagram stories, Harry and Meghan shared images of people holding signs, reading things such as: ‘Be kind to everyone you meet, it goes a long way.’

For each view of the campaign video, the company will make a donation.

Several celebrities have used their platforms to support the campaign, including Céline Dion and Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

Meghan Markle is apparently ‘troubled’ by ‘embarrassing uncle’ Prince Andrew

https://ift.tt/2vDT3OK

'The ultimate embarrassing uncle’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made news this month as they announced that they were planning on stepping down from their roles as ‘senior’ members of the royal family, hoping to become financially independent.

It was then announced by Buckingham Palace that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be losing their HRH titles following a new deal, and repaying ‘Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage’.

Releasing an official statement, Buckingham Palace announced: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.’

Following their move to Canada, reports have been emerging about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship with the rest of the family, with Prince William and Prince Charles said to be reaching out with love and affection, while Kate Middleton is rumoured to have been ‘in tears’ over her relationship with Harry.

One relationship that Meghan Markle is rumoured not to be missing however is with Prince Harry’s uncle, Prince Andrew.

The 59-year-old made news last year as he finally addressed his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, 66-year-old multimillionaire businessman and registered sex offender who died in an apparent suicide earlier this year.

Epstein, whose name Prince Andrew has been linked to, was being held without bail on charges of sex trafficking girls (some as young as 14) and in an attempt to address the allegations, Prince Andrew did a royal first, engaging in a one-hour ‘car crash’ interview about Epstein with BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis, aired from Buckingham Palace. As a result, he was forced to step down from royal duties and his Buckingham Palace office.

Meghan is reported to have not been a fan of Andrew’s before the scandal however, with a royal source via The Sun Online reporting that the Duchess was not impressed by his ‘stuffy’ behaviour.

‘Put it this way, she doesn’t view Andrew as one of the Family’s great assets and he’s not going to be one of the people she’s going to miss on her time away from the Windsors,’ the source reported. ‘She views him as the ultimate embarrassing uncle.’

‘Meghan is not enamoured of Andrew at all,’ a source told the publication after his ‘car-crash’ interview. ‘Not just because of his questionable attitude to women and how he referred to them in that awful Newsnight interview, in which he was talking in an almost alien language, as if all women were conquests.’

The source continued: ‘Meeting the real Andrew was even worse – she told a friend that she couldn’t see the attraction – he wasn’t exactly welcoming to her and that he was stuffy and pompous. And that he kept on making awful, puerile jokes – which he seemed to find hilarious.’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not yet commented.

Apparently Meghan Markle is actively looking for an agent

Amid the backlash they have faced, the couple made no secret of the fact that they were looking forward to having a bit more privacy and stepping back, moving earlier this month to Canada with their baby.

Now, the couple are apparently looking forwards, with reports that Meghan is thinking about her career.

‘Meghan is actively looking for representation. She has begun outreach,’ revealed a source via Us Weekly.

‘It can be a manager or an agent, but she’s reaching out to people to find someone to represent her for future professional projects.’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not yet commented.

Prince William opens up about always losing to Kate Middleton

‘William told me he couldn’t beat her’

The Cambridges are undoubtedly the most talked-about family in the world, with their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis entertaining the public on the regular.

Yes, from Princess Charlotte’s signature sass and Prince George’s surprising nickname to Prince Louis’ hilarious first words, these miniature royals never fail to make viral news.

It was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who made news this week however as Prince William opened up about how they compete with each other – and how when it comes to one particular activity, Kate always wins.

Yes, according to retired tennis player Rod Laver, William openly expressed how good his wife was at the sport.

‘I’d met William and Kate a few times, and in the Royal Box you get a chance to chat with them a little bit,’ he explained to the Daily Mail. ‘They play tennis against each other. William told me he couldn’t beat her.’

And it’s not just their love of tennis that is making Kate and Wills headline news this week, with the Cambridges said to be feeling the pressure more than most following the Sussexes’ split from the Royal Family.

‘Kate’s in a panic and has been having bouts of anxiety,’ an Us Weekly source reported. ‘She barely has time to rest, and when she does try to sleep, her mind is constantly racing.’

Well, that’s that.

The Sussexes have faced a wave of backlash from the public since their split from the royals, and according to sources, they have ruffled a lot of feathers within the palace walls too, with other working royals now having to step up.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are tipped as the two royals to take Harry and Meghan’s places, but the Mountbatten-Windsors that are feeling the stress now however are Prince William and Kate Middleton, with the Duchess of Cambridge said to be feeling the pressure more than most.

Kate’s in a panic and has been having bouts of anxiety,’ an Us Weekly source reported. ‘She barely has time to rest, and when she does try to sleep, her mind is constantly racing.’

It was reported this week that one of Kate’s main concerns was her friendship with brother-in-law Harry, who she was previously known to be very close to.

According to the Us Weekly report, Kate has been crying tears over her friendship with Harry, apparently feeling ‘incredibly hurt’ by their move.

‘She wishes she could speak to Harry. She misses him and fears she’ll never be close to him again,’ reported the source.

And in terms of her friendship with Meghan, it doesn’t sound good, with the source reporting that ‘they couldn’t be further apart.’

Come back Fab Four.

The Brexit effect on working women and what to do to protect yourself

https://ift.tt/38V5nby

This is a momentous time in UK history, with many experts predicting women may be hit the hardest in terms of job cuts and a rollback on legal protection. Top businessperson Anna Jones, co-founder of AllBright, advises four ways to futureproof yourself

Brexit effect women

Today is a historic day for the United Kingdom. As of 11pm this evening, two years after Article 50 was invoked, three General Elections and two Prime Ministers later, the day has arrived when the UK will no longer be a member of the European Union.

And whether or not you thought it would come, this is actually it.

In many ways January 31st marks a new era for the UK but there’s no denying that after almost half a century of membership, we are entering unchartered territory. A number of EU-led laws that we all take for granted may well change, so it’s important that we take the time to understand how this might impact our everyday working lives.

As co-founder of the women’s member’s clubs and network, AllBright, supporting wellbeing, female empowerment, and positive outcomes for women is something I am deeply passionate about. There is no denying that Britain has benefitted from the progress made by the EU in protecting rights for women. However, many of these rights exist in our domestic legislation, and several UK provisions pre-date the EU instruments.

So, there’s no reason to panic just yet.

And to cite a very British cliché, whilst we collectively continue to navigate uncertain times, it is essential to keep calm and carry on. For women at work and those planning on returning to work, now is the time to get on the front foot, swot up on the small print and ultimately, to focus on building flex and resilience. Here are just some ideas on how to get started in this post-Brexit working world.

Brexit effect women

Getty Images

Negotiation skills

In the event that the new laws that work to protect our rights and pay are diminished, it would be beneficial to develop your negotiation skills. Research says that 20% of women never negotiate. There are a number of reasons for this including fear of being disliked by colleagues and assuming it to be a confrontational conversation. There are techniques we can all learn to improve our negotiation skills. It’s really just a conversation just one with a specific desired outcome. The main tactic is to prepare beforehand – work out what you will give as well as what you require in return. What are your absolute ‘red lines’. Then it’s about practise. If you’ve practised beforehand (we suggest doing it with someone in your network who can behave as a ‘loving critic’) so you feel rehearsed and ready for anything.

Strengthen your sisterhood

The former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said, ‘There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women’. This has become a mission statement of ours at AllBright. In the face of uncertainty and potential adversity, it is essential to develop a strong network of peers and inspirational mentors. Surrounding yourself with others who are able to empathise with the challenges you are facing can considerably alleviate against stressors and stand to build resilience.

Know your rights

One of the sure-fire ways of feeling more empowered in the workplace and reducing stress is to be more informed and quite simply knowing your rights. In terms of Brexit, my initial advice to all working women would be to take some time to better understand your legal rights – so should you be in a compromising position, you are well equipped to deal with the situation at hand.

Continue your professional development

Even as a co-founder and ex-CEO, I believe that it is essential to continue building your skills toolkit. It is crucial to have a bank of fundamental transferable skills to enable you to understand and action any scenario. At AllBright, Our Academy courses and events provide women at all ages and stages of their careers with the tools to succeed. From professional development content to an online community, the AllBright Academy offers support, guidance and professional networking opportunities to executives, freelancers and entrepreneurs. With Brexit here at last, it is critical that we are sufficiently prepared to tackle challenges head-on with confidence, composure and certainty.

2020 is the year to take on new challenges. Perhaps this will be a time for us all to turn Brexit on its head, seeing it as an opportunity to hone in on and develop our leadership skills, confidence and knowledge, smashing our respective glass ceilings.

The best cleansing balms for make-up removal and a deep cleanse

https://ift.tt/36CgIvP

Keep calm and use a balm

cleansing balms

You know you take your skincare seriously and are officially an adult when you actually look forward to washing your face in the evenings. And when you enjoy washing your face, the best cleansing balms should most definitely be on your radar.

Cleansing balms can be used on most different skin types, so long as they are non-comedogenic, but they are particularly good if your skin is on the drier side as they can be nice and nourishing to the skin.

‘Cleansing balms, such as Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, are great for dry skin types,’ says London-based Consultant Dermatologist and the author of The Skincare Bible, Dr Anjali Mahto. ‘Once massaged into the skin, they work to dislodge any make-up, pollution or sunscreen that is left on the skin.’

Similar to cleansing oil, cleansing balms are great at removing tough eye make-up, and usually go on to dry skin, before emulsifying with water and rinsing away as a milky residue. It’s these excellent make-up removing properties that make them a great first step in your double cleansing routine.

‘Double cleansing involves using a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water to break down make-up, SPF and sebum on the surface of your skin first, then following it with a deeper water-based cleanse,’ explains Dr Anjali. ‘This removes sweat, bacteria and old skin cells. A second round of cleansing will clean much deeper into the pores to remove any impurities.’

Some of the beauty market’s most popular choices are the aforementioned Clinique, as well as the Emma Hardie and Elemis cleansing balms. Armed with a hot flannel, your skin will be left feeling clean and soft after cleansing, whichever you choose to buy.

These fearless transgender women are fighting for the right to be themselves

https://ift.tt/37EN5uY

From a famous beauty influencer to a 13-year-old girl dubbed the 'new Greta', the transgender community is full of inspiring stories

transgender women

LGBTQ History Month – an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history – kicks off on February 1, and while it’s super important to reflect on the past, we are excited by the current wave of transgender women who are being unapologetically themselves in a bid to shape a more inclusive future.

Nikkie de Jager

Known as NikkieTutorials, Nikkie de Jager is one of the most influential names in the beauty community (she’s created make-up looks on A-List stars from Reese Witherspoon to Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga.) The star came out as transgender in an emotional video posted to her YouTube channel on January 13. Titled ‘I’m coming out’, Nikkie said, ‘I want to finally reveal a part of my life that has made me who I am…I can’t believe I’m saying this today, but damn, it feels good to finally do it. When I was younger, I was born in the wrong body, which means, I am transgender.’

The 25-year-old, who is from the Netherlands, went on to say, ‘Filming this video is scary, but it feels so liberating and freeing… I want to inspire little Nikkie’s around the world who feel insecure, who feel out of place, who feel misunderstood. I hope by me standing up, that it inspires others to do the same. We need to accept each other, we need to respect each other.’

Following the revelation, Nikkie has thanked fans for their support and positive words, saying, ‘Thank you for accepting me and teaching me that on the other side of fear lies freedom’. Nikkie will continue to use her incredibly powerful platform to talk make-up, but also universal kindness to all people. We’re very here for this.

Angelica Ross

She’s having a breakout career moment — Angelica made history as the first female transgender actress to secure two series regular roles, coming off two pivotal back-to-back performances in Ryan Murphy’s groundbreaking hit drama, Pose, and his horror anthology series, American Horror Story: 1984.

When she isn’t making history on-screen, the star continues to lead the movement for transgender and racial equality off-screen. She is the President of Miss Ross, Inc. and the founder and CEO of TransTech, a social enterprise providing education and support for transgender people seeking to enter the tech field. TransTech places special emphasis on helping trans people find remote work during their transition process to allow them to maintain steady jobs free from harassment. She has toured nationally, speaking her powerful mission into action with business leaders, educators, and the President of the United States. Her work with TransTech also earned her the Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign. Pretty impressive, right?

Angelica has emerged as one of 2019’s most notable figures – Vanity Fair included her on their ‘Future Innovators list’ and most recently, Louis Vuitton tapped her as one of the faces of their ads. Keeping up?

Despite my physical condition on any given day, my soul smiles, because I "Know" myself in a biblical sense. I have learned to love myself from Beginning to End. I now know my life is valuable and worthy of protection, of love, and respect. I don't regret enlisting in the #Navy, to me it's part proof that I and many other #Trans and #LGBTQ people now and then, are willing to fight for our #Freedom(s) just as much as the next person, if given the opportunity to "Be All We Can Be" #transformationtuesday #veteran #Military #GirlsLikeUs #MissRoss #BeautifulAsIWantToBe #repost

Rebekah Bruesehoff

This little LGBTQ activist is one to watch this year. At just 13-years-old, Rebekah is a transgender girl who is using her platform to make change in public policy, raise awareness for LGBTQ youth and adults-alike, and spread hope throughout the world.

We would equate her passion and acute articulate nature to Greta Thunberg – except Rebekah is arguing for something much simpler than climate change. She is raising awareness to simply be herself.

Recently, Rebekah was chosen to be a part of Marvel’s Hero Project for Disney +, which highlights everyday kids who are changing the world. And perhaps even more impressively, in 2018 the American testified before New Jersey state legislature in support of a bill that would require schools in New Jersey to include the accomplishments and contributions of LGBTQ people in the curriculum. The governor signed it into law in 2019 and it will go into effect for the 2020-2021 school year. What an inspiration.

Nikita Dragun

Nikita started her rise to fame in 2014, when she started sharing make-up tips with her followers on YouTube. As she transitioned from male to female (changing her name from Nicholas to Nikita Dragun) she took her fans along for the ride, being completely open and honest during the whole process.

Since then, Nikita has become a big name in the beauty industry with her make-up tutorials, and even released her own cosmetics line – Dragun Beauty – last year. To put it in perspective, she has more than 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 5.8 million followers on Instagram.

The star told Good Morning America, ‘A lot of people probably don’t want to see me succeed, but I just want to create things that, as a beauty lover, I feel are lacking in the industry.’

Dragun Beauty is one of the first make-up brands to be owned by a trans woman. Nikita says the collection is designed for transgender people and ‘for people of all kinds’. ‘It is a truly inclusive brand,’ she adds. Last year, the star told Forbes,  ‘I want to do something major. I want to continue to push the limits into new things, like media. Could you imagine the first trans pop star?’ Yes please, Nikita.

Charlie Craggs

The trans activist is one of Marie Claire‘s Future Shapers, and for good reason. For years she has been on a mission to improve the rights and visibility of the transgender community, and this year is no different.

Back in 2018, Charlie – author of ‘To My Trans Sisters’ – started a campaign called, #ClawsOutForTrans, criticising Unicode (the group which decides what emoji make it onto our phones) for ignoring the transgender flag emoji. Just days ago, the Unicode Consortium revealed 117 new emoji designs that’ll be rolled out later this year, and among them is a transgender flag. Result.

Best known for her national campaign Nail Transphobia, Charlie travels around the UK with her pop up nail salon and her squad of trans nail techs, offering the public free manicures for the chance to sit down and have a chat with a trans person in a bid to break misconceptions and make allies (P.S, Nail Transphobia is taking bookings for February in celebration of LGBTQ history month).

All Charlie wants is to improve the lives of trans people, and we can’t wait to see how she is going to rule this year.
