How To Survive The Beast From The East If You’re A Fashion Person
Storm Emma may be whirling her way around the UK but that doesn't mean you have to look just as chaotic. Here's how to tackle the Beast from the East like a fashion pro...
Upgrade your headgear

That old woolen beanie you knitted when you signed up to your university’s crafting club is not going to cut it. Swap it for a fluro beanie instead. We love ACNE Studios for a fun take. A baseball cap is also another warm option and the brim acts as a great snowflake deterrent. Otherwise, go for a beret. Whilst, the fashpack love Dior’s leather version, the high street is full of much more affordable options too.
Ditch the wellingtons

Instead, go for a hiking boot like Veronika Heilbrunner. It’s very “Gorpcore” – 2018’s version of “normcore” which essentially encompasses wearing clothing and accessories designed for outdoor activities like hill-climbing in an urban environment. The same goes for snow boots. Dig them out. At least five fashion people I follow on Instagram have posted shots of themselves smugly stomping through the London sludge. Tights, apparently, are optional.

Go bright or go home

Fashion people love a theme and Instagram’s Eva Chen seems to have taken the meteorological offices ‘red alert’ warning and applied it to her wardrobe too. If head-to-toe colour blocking is a bit too adventurous for you, go for one brightly coloured item instead. Even better if it’s in this year’s must-have ultra violet hue.

Embrace the white-out

Continuing the theme, nothing says blizzard like an all-white look. However, don’t think it’s as easy as repurposing your Liz Hurley-esque white summer jeans. Instead, go for cosier fabrics, think corduroy trousers and cashmere knits. If you’re the type of person who spills their hot chocolate after one sip, keep the white theme strictly to accessories. Staud and Dense Lente are the bag names to drop.
Layer up

If you buy one thing this week make it a Uniqlo HeatTech long-sleeved top. Then add your favourite layers. Team oversized knits with a puffer jacket. And give lighter coats a new lease of life by pairing with a warm hoodie.

This is the next cult designer t-shirt to buy, and it’s empowering women
And Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis, Kate Hudson and Dakota Fanning all have one
In case you didn’t know, it’s International Women’s Day on 8th March, and Net-A-Porter are kicking off celebrations early with a line of kick-ass t-shirts designed by Ganni, Off-White, Rosie Assoulin, Chloé, Stella McCartney and Bella Freud.
Each tee is the designers’ take on incredible women, and all proceeds go to Women for Women International, the non-profit organisation that has been helping female survivors of war rebuild their lives and choose their own future (since launching in 1993, it has helped more than 462,000 women in 8 countries affected by war and conflict).
As such, each slogan shirt is unique, as each designer has a different take on an incredible woman.
Bella Freud for example was inspired by creative women, saying, ‘The incredible women I look up to are Coco Chanel for breaking all the boundaries of how women should dress; the writer Colette who wrote the wildest, most liberated prose while being held almost prisoner by her husband. Angela Davis whose eloquence and beauty makes her name synonymous with courage.’
Meanwhile, Chloé creative director Natacha Ramsay-Levi looked back to her first collection for the fashion house. She said, ‘Recognizing both the universality and individuality of women was behind much of what I wanted to say with my first collection at Chloé. This is what drew me to using a Cycladic totem of femininity, a symbol dating back more than four millenniums yet still timeless, as a pendant necklace. I wanted to translate this message for International Women’s Day, repeating this symbol in gold thread on the pocket with a matching metallic ring piercing through the sleeve. Together these details represent the life-giving force within all women.‘
Rosie Assoulin’s creation was inspired by grandmothers, while Off-White’s Virgil Abloh’s captures ‘the vibrant essence of the notion of a woman.’
Oh, and the designs have got the celeb seal of approval too, with the likes of Viola Davis, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Dakota Fanning and Zoe Saldana (to name but a few) wearing the t-shirt and posting it on their social media channels ahead of the big day.
The t-shirts go on sale today, and you’d better get yours quick before they sell out – because they will.

As Alison Loehnis, President NET-A-PORTER & MR PORTER puts it, ‘The work of Women for Women International is nothing short of inspirational. It is our great pleasure to be supporting them this International Women’s day with the help of some of our wonderful designers.’

Neutral Territory Wearing: Marni trousers, Jacquemus shirt, YSL sunglasses, Ancient Greek Sandals If you thought that the neutral trend was fleeting, think again. It’s time to inject your wardrobe with tones of earthy browns, caramels and nudes and make the most of this colour palette that gives our minimal wardrobes that much needed warmth and added dimension. Find your tone. All our skin tones are beautiful and unique and some neutrals look better on certain skin types. For example I have olive skin with more of a pink undertone so I love darker, earthier neutrals like chocolate browns and muted, unsaturated beiges. I literally tried on two nude jumpers today, one with more of an orange tone, and the other with more of a pink tone to make sure I’m picking the right one for me. How to style them. They’re perfectly styled with whites and black as well as other shades of neutral. Blacks give it that dark, sophisticated edge while the whites freshen it up. Going tonal with other neutrals is beautiful and feminie. A side note, this elevated Jacquemus shirt perfectly complements the simplicity of the trousers. I’ve been lusting after this label for years, and love that the shirting is now a staple for the brand. When you’re picking out your first neutral to inject into your existing wardrobe, consider what you’ll be wearing it with and what your wardrobe actually needs. I’m personally lacking in great trousers, easy dresses and lightweight knits, so this is what I’ll be focusing on this season. The best part about this trend is that it’s a neutral so it’s always in fashion. Pick classics and elevated pieces you can wear time and time again and styled in multiple ways. *Shot in collaboration with LUISAVIAROMA Photos by Ana Sunday-Tanedo Harper and Harley
