Meghan Markle has faced an endless stream of online bullying since becoming a royal, with the shocking level of abuse attacking everything from her family and race to her body and parenting.
‘I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces’, Prince Harry announced last month, as the couple pursued legal action against the tabloids that had ‘bullied’ the former Suits actress.
‘There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives. Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. We all know this isn’t acceptable, at any level. We won’t and can’t live in a world where there is no accountability for this.’
Meghan’s treatment has divided the public and it’s safe to say it has given her a lot of insecurities – something that she opened up about recently at a royal appearance at the Luminary Bakery, where she took part in a baking workshop for disadvantaged women in East London.
One woman at the event, Tanya, had been stabbed multiple times by an ex-partner. Meghan took time to speak to Tanya, explaining, ‘I was talking about this with someone the other day. We get into this habit of wanting things done immediately nowadays. There’s a culture of instant gratification, of the instant fix.’
She continued: ‘But we aren’t mechanical objects that need to be fixed. You’re a wounded creature that needs to be healed, and that takes time.’
Taking to the Sussex Royal Instagram account, the Sussex family posted: ‘It was a special moment to acknowledge the spirit of Luminary and their remarkable business model that opens its arms to women from vulnerable circumstances (be it abuse, poverty, trafficking, marginalisation) and equips them with the job skills and confidence to succeed.
‘If you find yourself in the area, please visit and support the women of @LuminaryBakery to enjoy their delicious baked goods and to see the impactful work they’re doing.’
