Find your new signature scent with the very best perfumes for women

https://ift.tt/3gbQEgr

It's easy to find the one with our guide to the best perfume on the market right now

Best perfume for women

With millions of perfumes to choose from it can be a daunting, almost impossible, task to find the best perfume for women – let alone ‘the ‘one’ you’ll use as your signature scent’. These are all the best perfumes for women in 2020.

How to find your signature scent.

You can endlessly spray yourself at perfume counters, but it’’s more likely to leave you with a headache rather than your ultimate scent. So how do you discover the scent that almost seems like its been made for you?

‘You should always be looking for the notes that resonate with you, and only you’’, says fragrance supremo, and founder of the Fragrance Society, Lorna McKay.

‘For instance, if you enjoy the smell of freshly cut flowers, you should look for notes of white flowers. If you prefer something warm, that almost hugs you, try something with amber.’

So before you even start misting fragrances around the room, take time to reflect on the things you enjoy. What have you smelled in the past and loved? What memories resonate with particular aromas?

Once you’’ve got that down, then you can spray – but take your time. Don’t spray several fragrances within close distance to each other. Scents have the ability to travel and so will mix together, resulting in an aroma that’s not even close t’o what you’ll take away when you spray your fragrance on its own. Fragrance combining is a whole different ball game altogether.

Essentially, you have to take your time before heading to a different fragrance counter. But, perfume is all about appreciation. After all, there’s a few surprising facts about perfume and the ingredients contained in them that everyone should know.

Once you think you’’ve found the one, spray it on a blotter. If it’’s still appealing, spray it on your skin. If it’’s still appealing (and not just something that will ‘do’), you’’ve found the one. It might seem like a long process, but it’’s worth it. Here’s what your go-to fragrance says about your personality.

And don’t worry about being without your favourite fragrance when you’re off on your travels, these best travel fragrance kits will see you through.

The best perfume for women 2020

To get you started, we’’ve pulled together the best perfume for women on the market right now, along with everything you need to know about them. 5 reasons why you must see the new Pixie movie

https://ift.tt/37TZzBQ

Psst: it's in cinemas now

Pixie movie
Aidan Monaghan/PIXIE

Everybody loves a bit of light relief, especially in a year when the world feels a little bleak.

Enter stage right new film Pixie, an all-singing, all-dancing comedy heist with a star-studded cast. From St Trinian’s director Barnaby Thompson, watch as Olivia Cooke, Ben Hardy, and Daryl McCormack cross paths with deadly gangster priests, including Alec Baldwin.

Set in the West Irish countryside, it’s a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, joy of a ride—literally, as the main characters road trip through stunning scenery. It’s Ireland at its best.

Psssst: it’s in cinemas right now, so book tickets for your nearest viewing, quick. Not yet convinced? Keep reading for five more reasons to get to a screening ASAP.

5 reasons why you won’t want to miss Pixie

1. It’s seriously hilarious

We mean, drug-smuggling, a road trip to remember, and Alec Baldwin as a priest, all set against a moody Irish backdrop? Yeah, we’re in. Get ready for a right laugh as you buckle up with Pixie and co. for the epic road trip of a lifetime.

Aidan Monaghan/PIXIE

2. Olivia Cook is an inspirational female lead

Finally, a female lead for a film about masterminding a heist. It’s about time.

Watch Pixie if, for nothing else, you’re keen to see a woman well-represented: as strong, smart, intelligent and capable. You’ll be totally transfixed as Pixie (Cooke) pits her wits against everyone, taking on the patriarchy to claim the right to shape her own life. It’s all in an attempt to avenge her mother’s death but, spoiler alert, of course, doesn’t go quite to plan. The fun normally begins when things go a little awry…

3. They’re being chased by… priests. Gangster priests…

Yes, you read that right. The plot thickens as Pixie finds herself on the run with two young locals, played by Hardy and McCormack. Predictably, they’re totally out of their depth, which only dials up to the comedy value.

Wondering who’s chasing them? Another (hilarious) spoiler alert: it’s the local priests. Yep, deadly, drug-smuggling gangster priests. We mean, who wouldn’t enjoy Alec Baldwin dressed up as a Priest and using a nun as a shield…?

4. You’ll be transported to the stunning Irish countryside

If you’re not sold by a seriously badass, patriarchy-smashing female lead and Alec Baldwin as a priest, then let us tell you that the landscape shots in Pixie are as stunning as award-winning Nebraska. Think a cold, calm, peaceful depiction of West Ireland totally juxtaposing the comedic chaos of the plotline and you’re on the right lines. It’s truly beautiful.

5. It’s got a strong soundtrack

All great movies have a kicker soundtrack, to boot. Pixie is no exception, and we reckon you’ll be dancing from your seat. Expect tunes from The Cramps,  Fireflies, Hidden Charms, Horace Silver, Fabienne DelSol, Odetta,  Bold and Marlena. You heard it here first.

Keen to catch Pixie in cinemas ASAP? Find out more at facebook.com/PixieMovie and share with us on social using the hashtag #PixieMovie.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have a surprising new reality TV star friend

https://ift.tt/37YubCi

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge never fail to make viral news, and with their roles elevated this year, the royal couple are all anyone can talk about.

While the Cambridge children get the most attention, from Prince George knowing he’s different from his siblings to Prince Louis’ love of cuddling, it’s Prince William and Kate Middleton who spend the most time in front of the cameras.

This week, it was a new celebrity friendship that made them headlines, as Prince William and Kate Middleton were seen out and about filming with broadcaster and national treasure, Kate Garraway.

The Good Morning Britain star’s husband Derek was hospitalised with COVID-19 back in March, something she spoke about with William and Kate during their day of filming for the Pride of Britain Awards.

The Cambridges – along with the rest of the world – appeared touched by Kate Garraway’s strength at such a difficult time, with Prince William reportedly telling her: ‘You are doing amazingly though. If it wasn’t for social distancing we would both give you a hug’.

Kate Garraway has since posted a photograph of the newspaper with the quote to her Instagram, captioning the upload: ‘What an incredible honour to be beside @kensingtonroyal as they paid tribute to our extraordinary frontline @nhsengland & @nhsscotland heroes who have risked so much for us all in the fight against #covid_19. Thank you @prideofbritain & @dailymirror. Do join in paying tribute to Britain’s heroes @prideofbritain Sunday night @itv’.

Well, this is a lovely friendship.

The 2020 Pride of Britain Awards is set to air on 1 November at 9pm, on ITV.

UK workers give employers '1,000 hours of unpaid overtime' every year

https://ift.tt/2HNQ7Wa

© 2006 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

Since the coronavirus lockdown, many Brits are working from home. Things have changed dramatically; online meetings are now the norm and the world has had to adapt to a digital way of working. But work burnout is a thing, with the rise of feeling the pressure to be connected 24/7, particularly in 2020.

And all those extra hours add up. In fact, many UK workers are giving their employers 1,000 hours every year in unpaid overtime – which equates to five years of your life over your working life.

Hitachi Personal Finance conducted a poll for National Work Life Week to find out just how well we’re doing when it comes to a work/life balance, and it revealed that Brits are working an extra 42 days each year for free.

The survey showed that 49% of participants admit to starting work earlier than contracted, and of those a third will be doing 147 days of overtime during their working life by adding on those daily 20 minutes. What’s more, 15% of Brits are totalling 330 days overtime when they begin their shift 45 minutes early. By starting an hour earlier, you’ll rack up one year and two months of unpaid overtime.

The research also found that 48% work after hours every day, with 3 in 10 adding another 147 days to their overtime tally by staying on for 20 minutes daily.

Of those involved, 61% said that they want a better work/life balance, although the lockdown may have impacted the hours worked as availability increases.

By clocking off on time, they add that you could be spending your free hours by learning a language, starting a new positive habit, studying for a degree or binge watching your favourite TV show (that definitely counts as being productive, okay).

Vincent Reboul, Managing Director of Hitachi Capital Consumer Finance said: ‘It’s very interesting to see the sheer amount of people in Britain who are working way past their contracted hours. If 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we need to value the time and experiences we have with each other and our loved ones, as well as making sure we’re dedicating time to ourselves.

‘Putting in the extra hours during the working day can sometimes be inevitable, but we wanted to highlight just how much this adds up to over time. This is particularly relevant as home working has become the norm for many, which appears to have blurred the lines between work mode and home mode. Hopefully these findings help workers to realise how much time they do have available to them once they start paying attention to their work/life balance.’

Do you find yourself working after hours, or have things changed for you this year? Let us know @marieclaireuk

Prince George and Kate Middleton actually influenced Prince Harry’s split from Cressida Bonas

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are one of the most talked-about couples in the world, making non-stop news from their stepping down as royal family members and losing their HRH titles to their relocation to California with baby Archie.

It is odd to think of a time when they weren’t together, but of course before Meghan, Prince Harry had a few A-list girlfriends.

His previous relationship with Cressida Bonas from 2012 to 2014 made headlines this week, as it emerged that Kate Middleton and Prince George accidentally may have influenced the break-up.

According to reports, the actress and model was put off a royal life from watching Prince George’s upbringing.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey wrote in his new book, Battle of Brothers, that Cressida was shocked by the extensive media coverage that she saw Kate Middleton and Prince George receiving. It was reportedly then that she realise and explained that she would not want to raise her own child in as much of a public way.

‘In 2014, she was said to have been “completely spooked” after watching the TV coverage of William and Kate touring New Zealand with baby George in tow,’ the book reads. ‘That was not the way she would want to enjoy her eight-month-old son, she regretfully explained to Harry.’

Despite the break up, they appear to have remained good friends, with Cressida even attending Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding in 2018.

Well, that’s that.

Prince William has opened up about the recipe he used to impress Kate with on date nights

https://ift.tt/2HGY8wa

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge never fail to make viral news, and with their roles elevated this year, the royal couple are all anyone can talk about.

And while the Cambridge children get the most attention, from Prince George knowing he’s different from his siblings to Prince Louis’ love of cuddling, it’s Prince William and Kate Middleton who spend the most time in front of the cameras.

This week, it was their early dating days that made news as Prince William revealed the recipe he used to impress Kate with on dates.

The dish of choice? Bolognese.

As part of a new cook book project to raise money for The Passage, a homeless charity of which he is patron, William shared his recipe for bolognese sauce

The method, that features minced beef, dry white wine and nutmeg, is reportedly one of 120 recipes by celebrities and chefs in the upcoming book, A Taste of Home.

‘I am the first to admit that I am not an excellent chef,’ William reportedly writes in the book. ‘The last time I was allowed into the kitchens at The Passage I made a spaghetti Bolognese.’

Kate Middleton opened up about William’s bolognese last year, telling Mary Berry during their TV special, A Berry Royal Christmas: ‘In university days he used to cook all sorts of meals. Bolognese and things like that. I think that’s when he was trying to impress me, Mary!’

William has also spoken about his cooking for his then-girlfriend.

‘When I was trying to impress Kate, I was trying to cook these amazing, fancy dinners and all that would happen was that I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire. And she’d be sitting in the background just trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation. So I was quite glad she was there at the time.’

These two!

Behind the scenes of the Chanel No5 Christmas campaign

https://ift.tt/3kJ9ldA

It’s a match made in perfume heaven: the most famous French screen siren of the 21st century is flying the flag for the most famous French fragrance. Marion Cotillard is the new face of Chanel No5 and we have an exclusive look behind the scenes of her first campaign. Because let’s face it, there’s nothing quite as magical or decadent as a Chanel No5 Christmas film…

Chanel No5 Christmas

The heroine of the new Chanel No5 Christmas campaign is empowered and independent – traits that really resonate with Cotillard.

‘She is a character who lives fully in the present,’ she says. ‘And that is something that I aspire to do. The woman in the film lives in the moment – without nostalgia for the past or fantasies about the future. I try to follow a path of joy, positivity and freedom. I don’t know if I have gotten there yet. But I am working toward it.’

Chanel No5 Christmas

Wearing a gold embellished dress, rumoured to feature over 10,000 hand-sewn sequins, Cotillard dances with a man in the moonlight.

Chanel No5 Christmas

‘I have made it a personal rule to sing, dance and laugh at least once a day!’ she says. ‘I dance a lot with my children. During these moments, I feel every cell in my body vibrating. I think that people like to dance because it is a moment where we feel alive.’

The campaign certainly has a wonderful modern pulse to it. Important given that it marks the release of the Chanel No5 Holiday collection, which re-imagines the classic fragrance as a body cream, lotion, shower gel, hair mist and deodorant.

Weleda is one of the most sustainable beauty brands on the planet. Here's why

https://ift.tt/3kIGPsN

Educate yourself with the need-to-know information.

Fun fact: did you know Weleda was runner up for best sustainable brand in our recent Marie Claire Skin Awards?

It’s not surprising, really. The brand has had sustainability as its core since the day they first launched in 1921. Taking the meaning of a ‘pioneering green beauty brand’ to the next level, covering all of the steps they’re taking to ensure they’re giving back is, quite frankly, hard to fit into one article. Sustainability is at the heart of the business and always has been.

Proof in the pudding: For example, they’re the first beauty brand in Europe to gain the UEBT ‘Sourcing with Respect’ credential, an eco-certification that’s pretty hard to come by unless you’re a company committed to change. Only one other brand in the world has it, so you can see it’s a pretty unique achievement, verifying that all ingredients have been sourced sustainably with respect for people and the planet, every step along the supply chain.

In a society where greenwashing and vague eco-pledges are, sadly, all too common, keep reading to find out exactly what steps Weleda is taking, as a brand, to build a healthier planet.

What makes Weleda so eco-friendly?

As Weleda so neatly puts it, ‘For a beautiful and healthy world, we must act sustainably.’ Hear, hear.

Wondering what exactly it is that makes Weleda so, well, green? It’s an approach that impacts every little bit of the business, from giving as much as they take in the form of re-planting, to biodynamic cultivation, to going the extra mile to make their cosmetics eco-friendly.

Some quick eco-stats for you:

  • Every single one of their natural and organic cosmetics is 100% NATRUE-certified.
  • Over 80% of the botanical ingredients in the products are from organic origin.
  • With no microplastics, solid or liquid, the range is certified ‘Zero Plastic Inside’.

So how does a company come to be awarded with the highest certification standard for cosmetics anywhere in the world? That little NATRUE seal on the pack guarantees the formulations are made from natural and organic ingredients, with no synthetic ingredients, no mineral oils, petrochemical derivatives or silicones, no microplastic beads or liquid plastics, and no artificial additives of any kind. It means any palm oil used is from certified sustainable origin, and it means, crucially, that when products are washed off, the formulations are biodegradable which is essential for sustainability.

‘We make no compromises when it comes to quality,’ explains Stefan Siemer, head of corporate sustainability at Weleda.

‘The aim is that our children and grandchildren will continue to have the same opportunities as we do now. We don’t want to take everything for ourselves and leave nothing for those who follow’, he adds.

That responsibility is threefold: ecological, social and economic.

Ecological sustainability

Weleda have their own biodynamic gardens plus 50 or so fair trade farming projects worldwide that support the resilience of the soil, biodiversity and local ecosystems. They also promote organic farming, and work with their farming partners to ensure healthy soils.

Social sustainability

Weleda are passionate about maintaining fair trade with their farming partners, paying fair prices, ensuring safe working conditions, and supporting social projects.

Economic sustainability

And lastly, Weleda have always been candid about their financial affairs, standing debt-free and in a good equity ratio. Weleda is still owned by the not-for-profit organisations created by the company’s founders.

Jayn Sterland, managing director of Weleda UK, explains:

‘Sustainability is about people, planet and profit. At Weleda we balance profit against what is good for the planet – it’s built into our DNA. When we make a decision we ask: is it profitable? Is it right for the planet? Is it right for people?’

Crucially, Weleda also admits where there is room for improvement—and that’s in their packaging. ‘We’re not perfect, but we’re working on it’, Stefan explains.  Weleda is working towards a sustainability goal for 2022 that at least 65% of product packaging must come from recycled plastic sources or bioplastics. The company is well on the way to achieving this, with their roll-on deodorant bottles already made from 70% post-consumer-recyclate, Skin Food tubes being made from 50% post consumer waste, and Weleda Baby bottles currently changing to 100% recycled plastic.

Pioneering green beauty since 1921

Weleda has been growing plants organically and creating natural health and wellbeing products for almost 100 years. When Weleda was first founded, climate change was barely recognised, but they’ve always been passionate about doing business ‘in harmony with nature’.

They point out that, as a brand, they have a responsibility to the places where they operate and for the workers who grow, harvest and further process the natural ingredients that make up their products. So, sustainability, for them, is about supporting the eco-systems and people that make business possible. As it should be.
