As we park this season’s spring/summer fashion trends, it’s time to look ahead and get excited about our new wardrobes. Whilst February’s fashion month was a far cry from the lavish affairs we are used to, with largely digital shows again, it still gave us a pretty good idea of the autumn trends 2021 we should be adding to our wardrobes.
The message is clear: now that lockdown is over, we must celebrate in the most over-the-top and brash way possible. Out with the tracksuits and knitted separates, in with the mini skirts, sequin jumpsuits and bold pink gowns. Here’s your lowdown, straight from the catwalk.

Autumn trends 2021: Oversized knits
Get ready to cosy down this winter, because designers are veering towards the XXL this season for maximum comfort – and style. Whilst key pieces include chunky cardigans and oversized scarves, if you’re going to invest in a single piece, make it the knitted dress. Whilst for AW20, it was all about slinky LBDs with cut-out details, for AW21, the likes of Chloé, The Row, Gabriela Hearst, Proenza Schouler and Fendi are backing chunky, roomy styles.
Autumn trends 2021: The new out out
Don’t be fooled by the aforementioned trend, loungewear is not an option this season, with designers celebrating the end of lockdown by taking our party wear to whole new heights. This is not one for wallflowers, if you’re going out, it’s about being seen and not disappearing in the crowd. Stella McCartney gave off serious disco vibes with her sequinned jumpsuit, while Burberry, Alberta Ferreti and Moschino plumped for glittering gold and silver ballgowns Dolly Parton would be proud of.
Autumn trends 2021: Monochrome saturation
Lilac was the shade of Fall 2020, but for 2021, things are decidedly less subdued. Think head-to-toe bursts of colour in the more-is-more school of dressing. At Roksanda, this translated into oversized coral and citrus maxi dresses, whilst Versace sent the Hadids down the runway in neon mini dresses complete with matching tights, shoes and manicures. Even the normally muted Burberry catwalk was awash with pops of red, pink and blue. Feel-good dressing at its best.
Autumn trends 2021: Shades of brown
If you feel like pops of colour are best kept to the summer months, that’s ok, because there were plenty of ‘safe’ shades on the virtual catwalks this season, from your classic beiges and blacks to the slightly more imaginative brown. For style notes, look to Schiaparelli, Acne Studios, Chloé or Burberry, who gave us a masterclass in tonal layering.
Autumn trends 2021: Puffer mania
Our obsession with puffer jackets shows no sign of disappearing, and I love this year’s take on the casual trend. Rick Owens sent models down the catwalk draped in puffer capes, while Isabel Marant put her signature 80s spin on the cropped coat. Even Louis Vuitton and Khaite are getting in on the action, a sign you can’t ignore it any longer.
Autumn trends 2021: Mini skirts
Whether on skirts or dresses, hems are going up, up, up this season, as we celebrate our re-entry into society – yes, our legs have been hidden in tracksuits for far too long. For those balking at this thigh-skimming style, especially after years of the midi being king, don’t worry. As shown at Fendi, Chanel and Versace, pairing it with tights is a must, even better if you’ve got some chunky boots too. Also look to Dolce & Gabbana and Tom Ford for some killer styles.
Autumn trends 2021: Logo mania
If you can’t tell it’s designer, is there even any point wearing it? The answer, as it turns out, is no. Having fallen out of fashion a few seasons ago, they are now back with a vengeance, with the likes of Gucci, Balmain, Chanel and Fendi delving into the archives for their heritage logos, to print them all over jumpsuits, knitwear, coats and accessories.
Autumn trends 2021: Power suiting
Nothing signals the return to the office quite like a sharply tailored suit, and it just so happens that there are plenty of them knocking about right now. At Victoria Beckham, the story centred around mismatched high-waisted trousers and blazers, while at 3.1 Philipp Lim, gender-neutral oversized checked suits reigned supreme. Stella McCartney went for pastel colours, while Rejina Pyo served up the perfect classic camel suit. The best reason to ditch working from home.
