As obsessed as we were with this year’s spring/summer fashion trends like ruffles, sixties’ dresses and beige, the changing weather has us excited about cosy nights in, Netflix binges and yes, all the layering. And after traipsing round the four fashion capitals during Fashion Month, we’ve filtered all the shows into the best Autumn Winter 2019 trends for you.
So what should you invest in for your new season wardrobe? Well there were plenty of power sleeves, tartan, leather and, for those of you who are colour averse we have excellent news: black is officially back (though did it ever leave, really?).
From oversized blazers to giant bags, sequin dresses to winter florals, here’s everything you need to know, straight from the catwalk.
Scroll on down for all the Autumn Winter 2019 trends to know about…
Autumn trends 2019: Check print
Blame the royal family if you will, but heritage checks are firmly back on the agenda for the new season. More is more here, from traditional tweeds and plaids to Sloane Ranger-esque checked blazers and shirts, the more you clash the better. Notes for this season: wear a checked jacket over checked shirt, tucked into jeans, tucked into high boots. Very Princess Di. Look to A.W.A.K.E., J.W. Anderson and Christian Dior for style notes.
Autumn trends 2019: Power shoulder
The 70s will always be the decade that won’t go away if the runway is to be believed, but there’s still a little room for another style decade, the 80s. Specifically, the power shoulder. This summer’s love-in with puff sleeves has given way to a more serious oversized shoulders. Designers including Richard Quinn, Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy and Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen all had their own take on the trend, from floral puff-balls to Working Girl camel coats.
Autumn trends 2019: Hell for leather
Leather in all guises (faux, vegan or real) has never been so chic. It was everywhere, on and off the catwalk during fashion month, but which leather tribe are you? The A.W.A.K.E 70s leather belted coat, the Matrix-style black Nanushka or the chic Tod’s separates tribe? You choose.
Autumn trends 2019: Back to black
Haters of bright colours rejoice! Black is back on the agenda for the new season. Wednesday Adams vibes were everywhere from Celine to Simone Rocha and of course, Saint Laurent. That doesn’t mean you have to go all goth though, there is a definitely feminine take on the trend thanks to sheer materials, puff sleeves, bows and beading.
Autumn fashion trends 2019: Colour coding
On the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got your brights. From sunshine yellow at Fendi and Balenciaga to hot pink and apple green at Molly Goddard, and more subtle burnt orange at Roskanda, now is your time to shine. The best way to wear the trend is just to mix and match (no more than three colours at a time though, no Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat vibes here), however if that’s too scary just stick to the one statement piece.
Autumn fashion trends 2019: Glitter
You simply can’t have party season without a bit of drama, and of that there was plenty on the catwalk. Think Dynasty and Studio 54-worthy sequins, and the likes of 16Arlington, Halpern and Molly Goddard will show you the way.
Autumn trends 2019: Winter florals
We all love a floral dress for summer, and designers are amping them up with a dark, dramatic twist for this winter too. Rendered on black backgrounds, flowers look dark and decadent at Richard Quinn, and slightly more romantic at Giambattista Valli thanks to washes of purple. Over at Preen and Erdem, there was a more vintage mood, with off-the-shoulder empire dresses and 50s silhouettes.
