How To: My Tokyo Makeup Look (Video) For most, January is a warm-up month – a chance to settle into the working year before your inbox hits one million and you’re downing three espresso shots before lunch. But, for me, 2019 started out a little different. I kicked things off with a short (but very, very sweet) trip to Tokyo with CHANEL to get acquainted with the new CHANEL Spring Summer 2019 Collection – Vision D’Asie: l’art du détail. If you’ve ever wondered what we actually ‘do’ on these types of trips, let’s just say every single one is different (and not all press trips are created equal). In just four days on the ground, I’d eaten everywhere from Ichiran (an insanely good, insanely busy ramen chain) to CHANEL’s very own Beige Alain Ducasse restaurant in Ginza, been treated to a 30 minute makeover by Australian face-painting extraordinaire and CHANEL makeup artist, Victoria Baron, had my mind blown by the teamLab ‘Borderless’ exhibition, and met Lucia Pica, CHANEL’s Global Creative Make up and Colour Designer. Oh, and I took a few of my fave new friends (the ‘Rouge Allure’ Liquid Powder Lipstick and ‘Baume Essentiel‘ Glow Stick) out for a spin around the streets of Shibuya, Daikanyama and Shinjuku to capture these pics. It’s easy to assume that products just appear on shelves each season with no rhyme, reason, or story behind them (I am definitely guilty of this myself), but my time with beauty genius Pica proved that the Chanel SS19 collection was carefully considered. From the textures and pigments, to the extremely chic packaging, it’s a feast for both your skin and eyes (and, let’s be real, bathroom aesthetic). Pica’s creative process for the range began on a journey across Asia with photographer Harley Weir. As they made their way through cities like Tokyo and Seoul, it was the diverse range of colours, patterns, and textures found in the intimate details of everyday life that inspired each individual product. Think neon pink nails, hints of gold and turquoise on the eyes, electric-red powder lipsticks, and the pièce de résistance, the creamy, glistening ‘Baume Essentiel’ Glow Stick (jetlag… what jetlag?!). The collection is available now in Chanel boutiques, should you feel the need to get your hands on some.
