Buckingham Palace has confirmed the tragic news that Prince Philip passed away this morning, aged 99.
‘It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,’ Buckingham Palace announced in a statement today.
‘His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.’
Royal family members including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have been among the first to share tributes to the much-loved royal.
Also sharing photographs and tributes are members of the public, with sweet videos and anecdotes of the Duke of Edinburgh resurfacing.
Among them was a sweet anecdote surrounding the Queen and Prince Philip’s first meeting, with their 73-year marriage going on to be the longest in British royal history.
National Geographic’s documentary, Being the Queen, looked into the Queen’s private life and how it links with her public role, featuring a rare recording where Lady Pamela Hicks, Prince Philip’s cousin, recalled the moment he met Queen Elizabeth.
According to reports, the Queen was then just a 13-year-old princess and Prince Philip was an 18-year-old cadet, with the two first crossing paths in Dartmouth in 1939, with King George VI, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret all present.
Referring to Prince Philip as ‘this absolute Greek god’, Lady Hicks recalled: ‘I think the Princess fell headlong in love with him at that moment’.
