Couture dresses are the perfect escapism, especially when we’re finally enjoying dressing up again after months of lockdown. Which is why Haute Couture Week, with its frothy, frilly and generally extravagant gowns, comes at just the right time.
Design houses such as Schiaparelli, Dior, Chanel, Fendi and Valentino made us dream once again for their autumn/winter 2021/22 collections, telling stories through intricate designs.
Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior focused on the details, delivering gorgeous broderie, magnificent pleats, trains, and hand-woven chains that compose patterns on the body.
Over at Chanel, Virgini Viard took her inspiration from the world of art, after rediscovering portraits of Gabrielle Chanel dressed up in 1880s-style dresses. This translated into ‘impressionist-inspired dresses, skirts that look like paintings and a long white satin dress punctuated with black bows like Morisot’s’.
‘There are dresses embroidered with water lilies, a jacket in a black tweed crafted from feathers with red and pink flowers,’ says Virginie Viard. ‘I was also thinking about English gardens. I like to mix a touch of England with a very French style. It’s like blending the masculine and the feminine, which is what I’ve done with this collection too. That twist is very much a part of who I am.’
You can always count on Schiaparelli’s Daniel Rose Berry to deliver the unexpected, and that he did with a nostalgic collection inspired by the greats such as Lacroix and Manet. The collection was conceived in three parts, one being a tribute to the house’s jackets of the past, the second focusing on bijoux, all the adornments that elevate everyday items.
Finally, the third act was a celebration of colour, with a standout gown being a black stretch velvet dress, perfectly fitted, with a gigantic shocking-pink silk faille rose at its centre.
Elsewhere, for his second Fendi collection, Kim Jones teamed up with iconic models Kate Moss, Amber Valletta and Christy Turlington, who modelled dreamy couture dresses in a short film set against the timeless backdrop of Rome.
