The latest UNFPA State of World Population report says nearly half of women don't have bodily autonomy

UNFPA‘s 2021 flagship State of World Population report has been released this month—and some of the findings highlighted are shocking.

The findings report that half of the women in the 57 countries surveyed are ‘denied the right to decide whether to have sex with their partners, use contraception or seek health care.’

That is, only 55% of women have full control over their own choices with regard to healthcare, contraception, and saying yes or no to sex.

Only around 80% of countries have laws supporting sexual health and well-being, and only 56% of countries have laws and policies supporting comprehensive sexuality education.

It’s the first time the UN report has focused specifically on bodily autonomy: that is, the power to make your own decisions about your body, without being afraid to do so as you’ll be met with violence or anger.

Bodily autonomy is a basic human right, and not being able to have it can have serious implications for your mental health, general wellbeing, and self worth and confidence levels.

And, as the UNFPA report highlights, it can also be ‘potentially depressing [for] economic productivity, undercutting skills, and resulting in extra costs to health care and judicial systems’, too.

The fact that nearly half of women still cannot make their own decisions about whether or not to have sex, use contraception or seek health care should outrage us all,” says UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem. “In essence, hundreds of millions of women and girls do not own their own bodies. Their lives are governed by others.”

The first-of-its-kind report measured not just how much power women feel they have to make their own decisions about their bodies, but further, what the laws are in each country to support bodily autonomy and a women’s right to make such decisions.

It found that as many as twenty countries or territories have ‘marry-your-rapist’ laws, where a man can escape criminal prosecution if he marries the woman or girl he has raped.

Forty-three countries have no legislation addressing the issue of marital rape – that is, if you are raped by a spouse.

And further, more than 30 countries restrict women’s right to move around outside the home.

Sadly, the report highlights that often, efforts to address abuse can lead to further violation.

Take someone trying to prosecute a rape, for example: as it stands in many countries, the system requires an invasive test.

“The denial of bodily autonomy is a violation of women and girls’ fundamental human rights that reinforces inequalities and perpetuates violence arising from gender discrimination,” says Dr. Kanem “It is nothing less than an annihilation of the spirit, and it must stop.”

“By contrast,” Dr. Kanem says, “a woman who has control over her body is more likely to be empowered in other spheres of her life. She gains not only in terms of autonomy, but also through advances in health and education, income and safety. She is more likely to thrive, and so is her family.”

More must be done to bring about change–no woman should feel like they don’t own their body.

The State of World Population report is published every year, and has been since 1978. It’s aim is to shed light on issues surrounding both ‘sexual and reproductive health and rights… exploring the challenges and opportunities they present for international development.’

Question: is all the socialising and ‘back to normality’ feeling a little overwhelming right now? There’s actually a phrase for that feeling – namely, post pandemic stress disorder – and doctors are keen to educate you on what it is, and why it might be affecting your day-to-day more than you know.

Take some recent stats, as an example: some studies are suggesting that between 30% to 50% of you feel some degree of anxiety and stress about life post pandemic. Re-entry anxiety is very real, and for good reason.

“Post traumatic stress following pandemics is not a new concept,” shares according to doctor Mariam Adegoke, GP and founder of Adegoke Wellness Clinic. “Research does show an increase in people suffering from PTSD following pandemics,” she goes on.

What is Post Pandemic Stress Disorder? 

According to psychotherapist, former NHS clinical lead and Sunday Times best selling author Owen O’Kane, it’s a new term directly referring to the trauma many are experiencing at the hands of the pandemic.

“Most people have heard of PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which can occur after someone has experienced a traumatic event in life,” he shares.

“PPSD, or Post Pandemic Stress Disorder is a phrase I’ve coined that is directly linked to the traumatic impact of the pandemic,” he continues.

Although it’s important to point out that it’s not yet recognised as a formal condition, O’Kane is petitioning for it to become one. “Many people will have experienced varying degrees of trauma over the past year: loss, isolation, illness, being unable to say goodbye to loved ones, business failures and horrific news headlines daily. The list is endless,” he explains.

“My concern is that the invisible nature of a pandemic may see trauma minimised, whereas an event like a war would normalise trauma.”

What are the main symptoms of Post Pandemic Stress Disorder? 

According to doctor Adegoke the symptoms of PPSD are very similar to that of PTSD, which characterised by intrusions (nightmares, repetitive and distressing images) and flashbacks, with people feeling as if they are reliving their trauma.

“People also experience increased levels of anxiety and depression, which leads to symptoms such as insomnia, changes in mood, nightmares and hyperarousal (feeling constantly on edge),” she shares.

As those behaviours present themselves, they can trigger other issues, too. “The presence of these symptoms can lead to avoidant behaviour – people avoid certain places or people that remind them of the trauma, becoming isolated and withdrawn.”

Physically, you could experience symptoms of anxiety such as chest tightness, racing heart, sweating, shaking and shortness of breath. “This may become especially apparent when people are reliving episodes or are in a situation that triggers their anxiety.”

What might be triggering PPSD right now? 

There are a whole load of factors that could be aggravating the disorder as we ease back into normal, O’Kane believes. Think:

  • Adjusting back to normal life routines
  • Uncertainty of covid and other variants
  • Financial issues
  • Fear around future instability
  • Anxiety around social interactions
  • Anxiety about returning to workplaces or crowded spaces.
  • Exhaustion from the events of the last year
  • Making sense of a new way of living post pandemic.

Any of these sound familiar or hit home? “It needs to be recognised that for a full year people have been told to stay at home because of a potentially life-threatening virus. It is an unrealistic expectation to assume that this readjustment back to ‘normal’ will be smooth and without real challenges,” he explains.

5 tips for managing stress and wellbeing post-pandemic:

1. Recognise you’ve lived through a challenging period

And accept that you may feel a little destabilised for a period, shares O’Kane.

“Talking this through with someone you trust will help you begin to process the events of the last year,” he shares. “Always seek professional support if you are struggling to cope or symptoms feel overwhelming. Trauma responses often need professional support, and this is crucially important to recognise.”

2. Plan how you will readjust to normal life

There’s no shame in opting for a pace that is comfortable for you. “Adapt a phased approach and don’t attempt to submerge yourself too quickly,” O’Kane recommends.

Top tip: Create a daily self-care schedule to help you reset, he advises. “This might include designated time out periods, walks, exercise, meditation or anything that helps you switch off. This will help you feel a greater sense of control and allow the mind time to heal.” Let our guide to self care ideas help.

3. Remember times when you have coped and survived

You know, those dark periods where you didn’t think you’d make it through, but did? Know this: you can do it again.

4. Reclaim your life

This one’s worth noting. “By gradually reengaging with activities, people or events that excite and motivate you, you can reclaim normality,” O’Kane shares.

“Looking ahead with a degree of hope is an important part of recovery after any traumatic time,” he continues.

5. Treat the underlying cause

It isn’t enough to treat symptoms, O’Kane shares. “The Covid-19 pandemic has been traumatic, and we can’t minimise or ignore that – it would be a travesty to do so.”

Doctor Adegoke agrees, adding: “It’s okay not to be okay, if you are struggling, contact your GP as your first port of call. You can also self refer for free NHS psychological therapy services on the NHS website.”

We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve had to frantically look up how to remove fake tan.

You might have had a tanning disaster – patchy wrists, stripes a tiger would be proud of or fingers so multi-tonal you genuinely consider wearing gloves in summer. Or you might simply want to get rid of a four-day-old glow that’s looking a little worse for wear. The art of fake tan removal is something that everyone should know.

Even if you’ve invested in the best fake tan and swotted up on all the fake tan tips, chances are you’re not going to get it right 100% of the time. But don’t worry, you’re not alone and it’s perfectly possible to rectify.

There are several things you can do to give yourself a more natural-looking and even glow. We spoke to Jules Von Hep, fake tan guru, celebrity spray tanner and founder of Isle of Paradise, for all the fake tan removal tips and tricks you could possibly ask for.

How to remove fake tan at home

First things first: ‘Don’t panic scrub,’ Jules warns. ‘You’ll end up taking the tan off in patches and it’ll become a snowballing effect.’

Instead, try using a light body polish (choose from our round up of the best body scrubs) mixed with a tiny amount of bath or massage oil and repeat a couple of times for an even, all-over fade.

Oil helps to break down the DHA (colour element) in self-tanning fluid. This is a good thing to bear in mind if you’ve just had a cracking spray tan; don’t moisturise your body with anything containing oil afterwards.

Alternatively, make a trip down to your local swimming pool if you don’t mind being a bit stripy in public. ‘The chlorine will break down the tan,’ explains Jules. ‘In the showers afterwards, take a pair of exfoliating gloves and work in circular motions. Steam rooms and saunas will soften the tan, too.’

If it’s all gone to pot and you need to get rid of your tan straight away, tanning brands now have products specifically developed to break colour down. That way you can remove fake tan quickly.

Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser was one of the first to market and sold out within three hours of its first launch. Which just goes to show how many of us want to remove and improve fake tan.

It can be used on old tans or freshly applied bronze; simply pump onto skin, smooth over the area you want to diffuse, leave for five minutes, then wipe away with a damp cloth. It’s that easy.

How do you get fake tan off without a tan remover?

Patchy hands and blotchy feet are often the biggest giveaway that your tanning sesh has gone wrong, but a kitchen cupboard staple could be the answer to your prayers.

Add two tablespoons of baking soda to some water and mix to create a paste. Rub this over your hands or feet, leaving it on for a few minutes to ensure you haven’t missed any particularly bad creases. Then wash it off.

The easiest way to wave goodbye to streakiness on your limbs is to run a bath and fill it up with a bath oil. This will soften the tan. While you’re in there, use a remover mitt in circular motions. It will ensure that any stubborn patches are evenly removed.

How to remove fake tan patches before re-applying

If you’re a regular, self-confessed tanning addict who can’t go a day slathering on some more glow, then it’s actually so important that you are removing your old tan before applying your new one.

Being the clever chap that he is, Jules created Isle of Paradise’s Over It, which works best on a three-day old tan. It also contains glycolic acid to exfoliate skin. Mist your entire body until your skin is saturated, wait five minutes, then jump in the shower and buff it off with a sponge or a flannel.

How to remove fake tan with lemon juice

Vaguely remember hearing something about lemons and brushing it off as an old wives tale? Turns out there’s something in it. ‘The old faithful combination of lemons and sugar mixed together will work to an extent, but you really need a mitt or glove to get deeper,’ Jules explains.

It’s also worth investing in an exfoliating mitt that will help to remove tan build up or mistakes. It’s an essential item in the at-home tanning kit.

How to remove fake tan from clothes

Getting fake tan stains on your favourite, goes-with-everything, white shirt or your super spenny The White Company bedsheets can be an absolute nightmare. You need to try and remove the stain while it is still wet.

Reversing the fabric and running it under cold water will help to loosen the product, but try not to rub it as you could end up smearing it and making it far worse. Instead, mix warm water and some detergent and sponge onto the affected area, repeating until the stain has disappeared.

So there we have it. We’ve just solved all future fake tan disasters from happening. Well, perhaps not all. There’ll always be one…

Holding hands on the beach, laughing and toasting marshmallows – it’s all there – and unsurprisingly, it’s going viral.

‘Thank you to everyone for the kind messages on our wedding anniversary,’ the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge captioned the sweet video. ‘We are enormously grateful for the 10 years of support we have received in our lives as a family. W & C’

It was a tribute from the Queen however that made particular headlines, as Her Majesty reposted Prince William and Kate Middleton’s new anniversary photographs to her Instagram account, captioning the tribute:

‘Wishing The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a very happy wedding anniversary. Today marks ten years since Their Royal Highnesses exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey.’

The Duke and Duchess captioned the loved-up snaps on their own social media platforms, with the simple phrase: ’10 years’.

According to the Cambridges, the new photographs were taken this week by Chris Floyd ahead of the Duke and Duchess’ 10th wedding anniversary.

While many focused on Kate’s similarities to Princess Diana and Prince Louis’ cheeky grin in the comment section, eagle-eyed viewers spotted a heartbreaking detail.

Featuring in the video alongside the family of five was their beloved cocker spaniel Lupo, who sadly died last year.

The Cambridges released a personal statement at the time, paying tribute to the ‘heart of [their] family’.

‘Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C’

As well as the home video, the Duke and Duchess also released two never-before-seen portraits to mark their 10-year wedding anniversary.

They later posted another photograph to social media from the recent shoot, captioning the loved-up snap: ‘Taken this week ahead of the Duke and Duchess’ 10th wedding anniversary’.
