Princess Diana upset the Queen by wearing this heirloom necklace as a headband

https://ift.tt/3pA5Kk7

The Princess always pushed the envelope when it came to style.

Princess Diana wore the royal family heirloom as a necklace to a gala in 1985

It’s long been known that Princess Diana was a rule breaker when it came to her sartorial choices. From the ‘revenge dress’ to opting not to wear gloves on official visits, Diana did it her way when it came to royal dressing.

Unfortunately, not all were in agreement with some of her more creative style choices – with one of Diana’s most iconic looks reported to have rubbed the Queen the wrong way.

The look in question? Diana’s innovative use of a royal family heirloom necklace as a headband when she attended a gala dinner in Melbourne, Australia, with then-husband Prince Charles.

Diana commemorated the 1985 visit by pairing a teal satin evening gown made by her wedding dress designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel with the heirloom piece of jewellery: an art deco, emerald choker once belonging to Queen Mary, that the Queen had passed to the princess upon her joining the royal family.

Princess Diana wore the royal family heirloom as a necklace to a gala in 1985

The decision to wear the choker as a headpiece, however, didn’t go down too well with the monarch.

‘What Diana was wearing while dancing around in her husband’s arms was actually a necklace that was part of the Crown Jewels that she had been given by Queen Elizabeth herself,’ royal commentator Debora Attanasio told Marie Claire Italia (as reported by Express).

‘It was a piece that the Queen was very fond of, but which she, in turn, decided to pass on to Diana as a wedding gift,’ Attansio said.

‘According to sources close to the Queen, having seen what Diana had done with it, Her Majesty became very irritated.’

But the unusual placement of the choker might not have been Diana’s idea – with the historic look reportedly coming about by happy accident.

Royal biographer Kitty Kelley claimed in her book The Royals that in a rush, Diana tried to put the choker over her head, rather than wait for someone to help her clasp it. When it got stuck and wouldn’t go over her nose, Canadian diplomat Victor Chapman convinced her to wear it as a headpiece instead.

‘Diana took the necklace and put it over her head rather than wait to have it clasped around her neck. She couldn’t get it over the bridge of her nose,’ Kelley wrote. ‘Vic roared. “Leave it there,” he said, “It’s young and fun, like you”.’

And so there you have it: one of Princess Diana’s most memorable looks. And we have to say, we’re firm fans of the jewellery trick – even if the Queen was decidedly less so…

Prince Philip 'doesn't want the fuss' of celebrating his 100th birthday in 2021

https://ift.tt/3hv4dZZ

The Prince isn't in the partying mood.

prince philip

This Christmas was a decidedly different one for The Queen and Prince Philip.

Breaking the royal tradition of spending the holiday season surrounded by grandchildren and great grandchildren at Sandringham, the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh instead spent a quieter Christmas in their small bubble at Windsor Castle.

And it seems that after a lowkey end to the year, Prince Philip is hoping for a quieter 2021, too.

The prince is set to mark his milestone 100th birthday in June of next year – but according to royal insiders, the ‘reluctant celebrant’ isn’t quite in the partying spirit.

‘You can’t do something if someone doesn’t want something doing,’ a Buckingham Palace aide told The Telegraph of the impending birthday.

‘The one person you can guarantee will not want anything to do with it, is the duke. He’s retired, he’s stepped back, he doesn’t want the fuss. You can’t blame him,’ the insider added.

Planning for Prince Philip’s birthday is reported to ‘begin in earnest in the New Year’; though current Covid-19 restrictions will make it difficult for the palace to plan ahead.

‘It is something that will have to be raised in the New Year. But we might get short shrift,’ said the source.

One milestone tradition Prince Philip won’t be able to escape is the congratulatory birthday message from The Queen – which the duke is likely to receive just as any other British centenarian would.

Restrictions permitting, the royal family are expected to gather together to mark the landmark birthday in some form – with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reported to be flying over from their home in Montecito, California to attend.

Some sources have indicated that this will be an extended visit for Harry, Meghan and baby Archie; as it is likely they will want to attend the Queen’s 95th birthday on April 21, and stay through to the unveiling of a statue of Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, on July 1 – to commemorate what would have been her 60th birthday.

Prince Philip will become the first male member of the royal family to turn 100 in 2o21, as well as the first royal consort to reach the milestone.

So whichever way the duke decides to celebrate it, we look forward to joining him!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first podcast just dropped – with an adorable cameo from Archie

https://ift.tt/3pz0M7h

The littlest royal made his first words in public on the podcast.

Harry and Meghan podcast

Since announcing it earlier this month, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell podcast has been eagerly awaited by fans across the globe.

One of the personal projects the couple gave up their respective roles as senior working royals to focus on, the podcast interviews a host of famous names – from Sir Elton John to James Corden.

But in the first episode released yesterday, it was one particularly adorable cameo that stole the show. The royal couple’s one-year-old son, Archie Harrison, made his first words ‘in public’ on his parents’ podcast – wishing fans a ‘Happy… New… Year’.

Harry and Meghan released the ‘2020 holiday special’ recording of their podcast to honour frontline workers and those dealing with ‘uncertainty and unthinkable loss’ as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harry opens the podcast, telling listeners: ‘We’re glad you’re here. As we all know, it’s been a year. And we really want to honour the compassion and kindness that has helped so many people get through it.’

Also among the prominent figures the couple speak to on the podcast are tennis pro Naomi Osaka, spoken word performer George The Poet, author Deepak Chopra, British activist Christina Adane and filmmaker Tyler Perry (who reportedly rented the couple an $18 million house when they first moved to LA earlier this year).

George The Poet – who opened the BBC’s coverage of Harry and Meghan’s wedding back in 2018 – had his own special message to deliver after a difficult year. He told listeners that by the time they tune into the episode, he would have proposed to his now-fiancée Sandra Diana Makumbi.

‘That’s amazing,’ Meghan responded. While Harry joked: ‘George, hopefully it was a “yes”, if it’s not or if it wasn’t then…this is kind of awkward so…’

The podcast ended on a hopeful note, with Meghan concluding: ‘From us I’ll say no matter what life throws at you guys, trust us when we say, love wins.’ Gospel song This Little Light of Mine, which, said Meghan, ‘played at the very end of our wedding… while we were walking down the steps of the church’ plays at the end.

But not before a very special guest offered a few words of his own.

Handing the microphone to little Archie, Harry says, ‘You can speak into it.’

‘Is it fun?’ Meghan asks, before their son replies: ‘Fun!’

He then wished listeners a ‘Happy… New… Year’ with the help of his father.

The cutest. We wish Meghan, Harry and little Archie the happiest New Year, too.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren't ready to leave the royal family just yet

https://ift.tt/37YFKJw

Excellent news for Harry and Meghan fans.

Harry and Meghan set to return to the UK

2020 has seen some huge changes for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

From buying their dream home in California, to news of a Netflix deal and official podcast, the couple have had a whirlwind year since announcing they would be stepping down from their respective roles as senior working royals.

And while Meghan and Harry are working hard to forge their own path and become financially independent, they might not be going anywhere just yet.

Because Harry is reported to be planning a trip to the UK in the new year to discuss a possible extension to his and Meghan’s 12-month exit plan, as agreed upon in talks at Sandringham earlier this year.

Pandemic restrictions permitting, the prince is reportedly hoping to return to the UK for the Queen’s 95th birthday on April 21, as well as Prince Philip’s 100th in June and an unveiling of a statue of his late mother, Princess Diana, on July 1.

Speaking to The Sun about the rumoured visit, royal biographer Andrew Morton said, ‘Although they will do some of it by Zoom, Harry wants to meet face to face to tie it all up.’

He continued, ‘Things seem to have calmed down. Harry has been in contact with the Queen more often than you would think. But certain things you need to be there in person to sort. They will need a few weeks. That could be done after April, depending on Covid.’

Harry and Meghan’s exit deal – which offered the couple the option of returning to their working royal roles –  is due for review on March 31. Though the couple’s exciting future projects signal that they won’t be returning to the fold, the paper claims that the couple will be discussing the possibility of a more permanent extension to their relationship with Buckingham Palace as non-working royals.

Among the topics thought to be up for discussion in the new year talks is what will happen to Prince Harry’s honorary military titles. Harry’s forces appointments were placed on hold for a year following his resignation, and he is not currently allowed to take on any roles using them.

Whatever the outcome of the talks, we look forward to welcoming Meghan and Harry back to the UK soon.

Here's the royal that garnered the most public interest in 2020

https://ift.tt/2M86Kxs

Drumroll, please...

most searched for royal 2020

From the pandemic, to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relocation to California, 2020 was a seismic year for the royal family.

The devastating global impact of COVID-19 may have dominated the news, but there were plenty of big changes in the royal family that hit the headlines, too.

With rumours of a rift between Prince Harry and Prince William, Princess Beatrice’s surprise royal wedding, and Princess Eugenie’s exciting baby news, this year was far from a quiet one for the royals – as they changed the way they worked, and adapted to a restructuring of senior working family members following Harry and Meghan’s relocation.

So given recent royal events, the most searched-for royal of the year doesn’t exactly come as a surprise.

Taking the title a second time, Meghan Markle became the most Googled royal of 2020 – beating out both The Queen and husband Prince Harry to the top spot.

Meghan was also the most Googled public figure in 2018, the year she and Harry tied the knot at St George’s chapel in Windsor.

All eyes were on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this year as they announced they would be renouncing their respective roles as working royals, becoming financially independent, and relocating from Frogmore Cottage  to Montecito, California.

But most searched-for doesn’t necessarily mean most popular. Meghan and Harry faced much public scrutiny for their decision to step back from the limelight, with many criticising their tax payer-funded renovation of Frogmore Cottage – which is thought to have cost the Sovereign Grant around £2.4m. (It’s since been reported that the couple have paid back the money in full.)

In fact, the most popular member of the royal family is The Queen. According to a recent YouGov poll, 78% of those surveyed said they had a positive opinion of the monarch. She was followed closely by Prince William, who has 73% public favour, and Kate Middleton, who has 66%.

Meghan and Harry continue to forge their own careers outside their royal roles – with exciting news of an official podcast and new charitable organisation to come in the new year.

With all that in mind, we can hardly wait to see what 2021 has in store for the royals.
