Real Talk: The Mom Pooch Struggle is Very REAL August 29, 2019 at 12:00PM
As much as I’ve learned to love and celebrate my curves, there are times when old thoughts begin to surface, and I have to work extra hard to believe everything it took me so long to learn about self-love and body confidence.
Swimsuit season, along with tropical vacations like my recent one, have a way of making old insecurities come up, but there’s something else that’s afflicted my body image over the past few years that I’ve yet to discuss: my mom pooch.
Like almost every woman I know who’s carried a baby in her womb, having a stretched tummy simply comes with the territory, yet it’s still a very hard pill to swallow—especially for those of us who have struggled so long to accept the bodies we were born with, only to now be left with a different body we must learn to love all over again.
After having my son, my stomach was certainly stretched out, and I had some excess skin and fat, but it wasn’t as noticeable as it is now, after having my daughter.
If I’m being completely honest, it’s taken me a really long time to be able to even say the word “pooch“ without wanting to cry. C coming out and expressing my feelings about it feels like a major step in the right direction. And while I know I have a long journey ahead of me, learning to accept the new version of my body after babies, I’m finally ready to acknowledge it, accept it, and tackle my emotions head on, without hiding behind denial or the glimmer of hope that the appearance of my stomach will change over time.
So here’s my truth: I haven’t fully accepted my after-babies body (aka larger breasts, waistline and mom pooch), and that’s OKAY, because self-love and acceptance is a journey.
For now, I’m going to work on looking at myself in the mirror more, appreciating what my body has accomplished in birthing two healthy babies I have the honor of raising and loving. My hope is that anyone out there struggling like I am will do the same.

BRINGING BACK A REEBOK CLASSIC THIS SUMMER… THE CLUB C-85 VINTAGE SNEAKER August 18, 2019 at 03:36PM
For as long as I can remember, I love to wear sneakers with dresses more than anything in the world. And as I’m writing this article, I’m sitting behind my laptop outside at the pool, wearing my new Reebok Club C-85 Vintage sneaker with a long floral linen dress. Heaven! In fact, the Reebok Club C-85 Vintage sneakers are a favorite in our household; Thomas and James were the first to own a pair, and now finally I have my own pair! Needless to say, Stella is asking for a pair now too…
Now for I think as long as YOU can remember ME, you know me as the girl who wears a pair of sneakers with her gown during Haute Couture Week in Paris. And you also know this doesn’tonly happens during that week… in my ideal world, this is my go-to look. I’m sometimes joking that it is one of my dreams to drop off the kids at school in a little couture dress, with my Reebok Club C-85 Vintage sneakers, yet, I have so many dreams to work hard for that I obviously have the remove “couture” from the equation for now, and go for any opulent dress that comes my way that allows me to run from uptown to downtown, and back.
And the “running” part definitely remains part of the equation, because there’s never enough hours in the day, and I’m always in a hurry and literally done with the blisters on my feed from any other shoe than my favorite pair of Reeboks. What I love so much about this pair is that they look like they’ve been literally brought back from the past. When Thomas saw them – and the one he has are less “vintage” looking – he was like “these have been saved from the 80s and sold now!”. Obviously this isn’t the case, because Reebok’s use of materialsadvanced with time, but the design is SO GOOD. So it’s really just as a compliment towards the incredible “new” vintage look they have. Needless to say, they have an easy color combination, which goes with anything. I combined it with a green dress that is similar to the green in the sneaker. A perfect coincidence!
Now I hear you think “ what if I am not the person to wear sneakers with dresses, how should I wear these vintage Reebok Club C-85 Vintage kicks?”. Well, this is quite simple, because you can basically pair them with everything, but WHAT I WOULD wear them with otherwise is a pair of jeans, cropped, and a simple slightly oversized t-shirt tucked in, OR a pair of denim shorts and a men’s shirt. Maybe add a Havana straw hat, or a pair of black or white sunglasses. They get you ready for life in the city, running from meeting to meeting, or picking up the kids. All in the perfect Retro Style!
Thank for the awesome sneakers Reebok, I loved working with them, and I can’t wait to wear them this fashion month!

What Does Personal Style Mean in 2019? I’ve been wondering a lot lately about what personal style means in the age of Instagram. Every time we open the lid of our laptops or unlock our phones, we are immediately bombarded with the latest trend, buzzy new brand or It girl on social media. It can all start to feel a bit overwhelming, can’t it? Wearing: Prada suit, corset and belt The dissemination of runway trends these days, via Instagram and the internet at large, is so vast and happens so quickly that it’s almost a blink-and-you’ll-miss it scenario. The pendulum swings so fast that once the runway looks hit the store, we’ve already seen so many images of them on the internet that they feel like they’ve already lost all their sheen. Add to that the fast fashion brands with mammoth budgets who recreate and imitate these looks at break-neck speed—using their insane social reach to plaster images across our feeds—and it feels like we’ll always be downwind of the latest trend. Our metabolism for new trends is only getting faster. The ubiquity of trends online lessen their magic—clothing starts to feel less and less like an expression of our personality, and more like a never-ending game of trying to keep up. Think back to school when you would save up all of your pocket/work money to splash on a pair of Betina Liano skinny jeans or converse that you ~couldn’t live without~ (am I showing my age here?) and would absolutely cherish for years to come. This seems like a prehistoric time, thanks to the shoppable function Instagram and services like Afterpay, whereby whatever we want is at our fingertips all the time. Wearing: Incu tank, Levi’s jacket Wearing: SIR. dress So, is the answer abstaining from Instagram altogether? I don’t think so. Instagram is a great tool. It connects us with like-minded people from across the world, opens up job/collaboration opportunities for creatives, is a great form of self-expression, and has given a voice to smaller brands who might not otherwise have had one. In order for our own personal style to flourish in the face of this inundation of trends, I think we need to be more mindful about our feeds, and more conscious about what content we are drawn to and why that’s so. Wearing: Chanel knit, Wolford briefs, Chanel boots In a throwaway culture that thrives on a fast turnover of trends, I think it’s more important than ever to cultivate our own unique personal style. For me, my personal style is the result of so many different factors. There’s mainstays in my wardrobe that are the sartorial equivalent of a hug from a loved one in that they feel like home—among them are blazers, turtlenecks, sneakers and jeans. These are the foundational pieces of my personal style: they make me feel good, and I know I can always rely on them when I’m in a creative rut. I think the cornerstone of great personal style is also the ability to have fun with your outfits. Going vintage/thrift shopping can be a great way to let yourself be drawn to clothes that evoke an emotional reaction in you, rather than shopping online or in-store based on the latest trends. Finding inspiration can also be as easy as going offline and walking in nature or around the city—taking in all the colours, textures, materials and images that surround us. For another hit of inspiration, go and see an old film, or spend the afternoon milling about a gallery or museum. In determining your personal style in 2019, it’s important to ask ourselves why we are drawn to certain pieces of clothing and why. Personal style is just that: personal. Do whatever works for you! How To Style Denim From AM to PM There’s a few things in life that I can’t fathom living without: my morning coffee, the litany of Dermalogica products that sit atop my bathroom shelf, binging Love Island, and, in saving the most important for last, my ever-evolving denim collection. If I had a dollar for every time I tried on twenty different outfits only to revert back to a classic ‘jeans and a t-shirt’ combination, I’d have enough money to buy every pair of jeans that have elicited an “OMG I WILL LITERALLY DIE WITHOUT THESE” claim from me. And trust me, there’s been a lot of those over the years. Slipping into your favourite pair of jeans is akin to returning home from a long day at work—a comforting and supremely satisfying feeling. But, over the years, jeans (and denim at large) have earned themselves the reputation of being purely casual wardrobe pieces. Today, I’m here to set the record straight. Find me an occasion/time of the day, and I’ll find you a denim-based outfit recommendation befitting of the dress code. Actually, I’ll go one better and do the leg work myself! Without further ado, a guide to styling denim from sun up to sun down (and beyond). In the AM Whether you’re the early bird who likes to get the first worm (read: latte), or the late riser who rolls out of bed only after snoozing every alarm you set the night before, these Light Wash Nobody jeans are the perfect pre-day jeans. These are as snug as they are comfortable, which is the main objective for lounging around the house before you carpe diem, espresso in one hand and your iPad in the other. Pair with an organic cotton t-shirt, a pair of slides and your signature gold necklace for ultimate ease. Running errands You know you’re getting old when you actively look forward to running errands, but you know you’re doing it in style when you plan out your running-around-the-city outfit with the same gusto as Lady Gaga prepping for the Met Gala. On both accounts, guilty as charged! While the key here is comfort, that doesn’t have to equal frumpy. Know that you’ll still look chic AF if you bump into your ex by pairing your Skinny Nobody Jeans with a ribbed cotton tank, your favourite pair of shades, and a handbag that’s big enough to fit the essentials but small enough to not weigh you down. Cinch at the waist with a statement belt, and if the weather calls for it, an on-trend beige coat. Et voila! You’re ready to work your way through that to-do list. Work Casual Fridays withstanding, work calls for a more polished approach to denim. I’ve got one word for you: Blazers. Yep, a structured blazer paired with a turtle neck and a darker shade of denim— like these Black Nobody Jeans, which were made with the modern working woman in mind—will make sure that you adhere to sartorial protocol while still looking stylish. Now just add a lick of your favourite everyday nude lipstick and you’re good to go. Afternoon Drinks Double denim? For a post-work spritz with the girls? Are you bonkers? I know, I know. There’s a very fine line between looking chic in double denim and looking like you’ve just stepped out of a time machine sent from the early 90s. Opt for a darker denim ensemble—like this Nobody Jacket paired with these Nobody Jeans—for a more refined look. Bring the look into the present day with the addition of a smattering of fine gold necklaces and a pair of statement kitten heels.* *Foot note: a neutral-toned pedicure is a non-negotiable for this look. Evening For a denim look that’ll see you through the evening, it’s time to get a little more daring with the rest of your outfit. Enter the Going-Out Top. This can take the form of a cute crop top as pictured here, a spaghetti strap cami, or a slinky metallic number, but whichever path you choose, remember that the only operative here is to have F-U-N. Balance out the party that’s going on up top with these Cropped Wide Leg Nobody Jeans and your favourite strappy heels. Let’s go, girls! WMBW Eats – Golden Union Fish and Chips Despite being filled with Michelin star restaurants I think it’s safe to say that with names like ‘Toad In The Hole’ or ‘Bubble and Squeak’, British cuisine has never really taken off! There is however an exception to the rule! A simple dish of fried fish and potatoes proved to be so deliciously popular that even the British colonies adopted it as their own! Heck, the whole world celebrated it! In fact, when it comes to national dishes, I don’t know if there is anything more British than fish and chips! Well, except for Chicken Tikka Masala that is…as that is in fact, the ACTUAL national dish of Britain. I know, it’s weird. Needless to say, one can’t come to London without having at least one fish and chips experience. As it can often be so difficult to find a local dish that hasn’t been bastardized for tourists, we thought we would share this not so hidden gem we stumbled upon. Well, ‘gem’ is maybe an overstatement, it has it’s downfalls, but we’ll get into all of that now. Golden Union fish and chips is located right at the edge of SoHo and just off of Oxford Street. You can almost say it’s hidden in plain sight. Carefully disguised to look like an 80’s chippie (that’s what the Brits call it), this place is beaming with all kinds of retro treasures. Don’t worry, you won’t feel like you’re in the 80’s for very long though, the prices will make quick work of that! We found it after doing a simple “fish and chips near me” search on google on prevous trip 2 years ago. Golden union popped up and as it was the closest we made a B line for what was to be a quintessential fish and chips experience! It must have left a serious impression as when we visited again recently, it was the only place we went back to. The menu is simple, fish and chips (in different varieties and formats) fried and served with chips and tartare sauce. You can also get other traditional ‘chippie’ dishes like fried sausages, meat pies and even a simple chip buttie – chips in a roll…for £5…simple, just not cheap. We were there for the fish, so decided to order the large cod and chips to share (we were still calorie counting during this trip so sharing was the only option) The fish and chips is everything it’s supposed to be. A crispy golden batter that cracks under your knife to reveal a soft flaky fish below. It truly was perfect. The chips were good, they could have been a little crispier, but once we doused them in salt and malt vinegar it didn’t make much of a difference! I mean…deep fried potatoes right? How bad can they be? We were both a little disappointed in the tartar sauce, not only is it tiny (at £2 a portion) it lacked that tartness its name so blatantly promises. The ‘large’ portion was probably just enough for the 2 of us, though we could have done with some more chips…Because fried potatoes! In stark contrast to the food, the service was terrible! The very hipster waitresses seemed to compete with each other in a little game called “ignore the customer’ – they were both very good at it! I did, however, receive a lot of attention when I stepped beyond the ‘wait to be seated’ sign at the entrance and was told in no uncertain terms that I was to PLEASE WAIT HERE!! Strangely enough, it all seemed like part of the experience so I wasn’t too bothered! Now in case you missed my comments on the prices above, let me reiterate that this is not a cheap chippie!! At £30 for 2 beers and a shared main (no starters or dessert), it hardly seems worth it! Though for some reason it is! With all the amazing places we visited on our last trip to London a year ago, this was the only one we returned to and perhaps the only one we’ll go back to on our next trip! Maybe we’re just suckers for crispy fish and punishment! Here’s one last top tip…Having felt slightly short-changed on our chips in the restaurant we decided to get a box to go on the way out – It turns out the take-away menu is significantly cheaper than the sit-down menu and way better portioned – the chips were also crispier but that may have just been good luck! So, if you find yourself in London with a fist full of Pounds and a hankering for fish and chips, you can’t go wrong here. Okay. Bon Apetite and stay fancy. whatmyboyfriendwore

Natalia Dyer on Stranger Things, spoilers and who inspires her
With Stranger Things back on Netflix, Natalia Dyer tells us about working with Winona and how sci-fi became a cultural force for good
How does the new series differ from the first two?
It’s the first time where it’s summer in Hawkins and nobody is in school, so there are lots of activities, like Nancy [Dyer’s character] has a job. This season there’s more action, humour and fun, but it’s also quite scary. It’s a big one.
Who is your strangest co-star?
Oh, they’re all a bit strange, aren’t they? I love Brett Gelman [ who plays Murray Bauman]; he’s so off the cuff. And David Harbour [Jim Hopper] is a big, funny personality. Even when we’re filming dark things, the goofy cast make the set electric. I think actors in general are a little strange.
Have you learned a lot from Winona Ryder?
She’s very hands-on and always asking questions. Winona knows when things feel right and when they don’t, and she’s not afraid to say so. I look up to that.
Which other women in the industry inspire you?
I respect Jameela Jamil from The Good Place so much for using her platform to speak out about how women’s bodies are portrayed. I admire people who use their fame to say something that’s important.
There’s a real sci-fi resurgence at the moment. Why do you think that is?
It’s fun and everybody needs a little escape. The genre lets us all enter a mysterious world and explore things we wouldn’t normally think about.
Do you get pestered for spoilers by your nearest and dearest?
No. In fact, some of them haven’t even watched the show, which is nice in a way. My family don’t talk about it too much, but they are very supportive.
As a child you were in Hannah Montana: The Movie. Did that experience enable you to give advice to the younger cast members of Stranger Things?
Advice? I don’t know, but I do feel protective. I’m 22 and I can’t imagine having this life as a teenager – social media and everything. I’ve met all their parents and they’re very grounded people.
Is there anyone on your bucket list you’d love to work with?
Yes, lots of women – anybody from Wine Country! Those are my kind of people – the Amy Poehlers and the Tina Feys. And Mindy Kaling. That would be a lot of fun.
Stranger Things is out now on Netflix.
