Mom on Duty: Shirtdress and Sneakers June 27, 2019 at 12:00PM

I really love how versatile shirt dresses are – they truly work for any occasion, from the office to date night, and even a mom duty day at a theme park! This is another quick and easy outfit from my recent road trip to Southern California. Dave and I have been wanting to take Narayan to Universal Studios as soon as found out about the Transformers ride, so a day at the theme park was our main objective for visiting the area.
For a busy day of walking and in & out of rides, I knew I needed an ensemble that was comfy enough to get me through the day, but also polished enough to still feel like myself, so a shirtdress worn over shorts and a cami was just the trick!
If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I rarely wear sneakers outside of walking my fur baby bulldog Kingston, but if you’ve ever tried wearing sandals (aka non-supportive shoes) to a theme park, you know that just isn’t smart, so I caved and wore one of my fave pair.

I’m a seasoned festival-goer and this is my essential beauty packing list
The must-haves and the oh-my-goodness-leave-that-at-homes
With Glastonbury coming to a close today, the festival season has officially hit. Portaloos, outrageous outfits (festival fashion is definitely its own genre) and warm cider – this, to me, is the real start to the British summer.
In order to truly nail a festival, your beauty bags needs to been on point. It has taken me some time to perfect, but I now think that I have created the ultimate beauty packing list. It’s all down to the essentials that you can’t live without and the ones that, despite your initial thoughts, should be left at home. You need hard working space-saving, multi-use products; make-up that makes you stand out and skincare that saves your skin from total disarray.
Here’s my roundup of ‘what to pack’ for a festival…
Biodegradable face wipes
I don’t think I could make it through a festival without these beauties. As my usual double cleanse is off the cards, I turn to these at the end of the day so that I’m not sleeping in my make-up. The key here though, is to make sure that they’re completely biodegradable. Simple’s wipes are brilliant at ridding my skin of every last scrap of make-up, even waterproof mascara, and I can rest easy knowing that I am not adding to landfill, because they break down in just 42 days. That’s better than grapefruit, melon and onion peels.
Simple Kind To Skin Biodegradable Cleansing Wipes, £4.39 Boots
Mirror
I cannot tell you how many times friends have forgotten a mirror and ended up using mine. How on earth do you expect to do your make-up in the evenings and assess the damage in the morning? Don’t rely on the tiny one in your eyeshadow palette, opt for stand alone one. A total essential.
Folding Travel Mirror, £6 Boots
Under-eye patches
Probably not one you will have thought of, but trust me when I say these will provide sweet relief in the mornings. Festivals rarely provide a good night’s sleep – noisy neighbours, boiling hot tents, staying up to watch the sunrise or maybe just skipping sleep completely to keep the party going… Cooling and hydrating under-eye patches are heaven sent for puffy, dark-circled eyes.
Soap & Glory Puffy Eye Attack Under-Eye Brightening Hydrogel Patches, £3.50 Boots
CC cream
I really don’t like wearing too much complexion make-up when I’m at festivals. Firstly, I like to let my skin breathe as much as possible, but also because I’m not able to thoroughly cleanse my skin every night I hate the idea of adding to that. HOWEVER, I am no fool. I know that after a couple of days in a field, when more often than not my morning cuppa has been a cider and I’ve failed to get to bed before 3am the whole time, my skin is going to look slightly worse for ware. Enter IT Cosmetics illuminating cc cream. Nothing camouflages redness and blemishes better in this time of need. It’s full coverage, so at a festival I’ll only use a small amount and apply it those bits that need a bit of TLC.
IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream Illumination SPF50+, £31 Boots
Colourful eyeliner
You can guarantee that everyone you see will be covered in glitter (it’s synonymous with festivals after all), but for those times when I don’t want to blend in with the crowd or, if I’m honest just cannot be bothered, I’ll apply a bright eyeliner to my eyelid and be on my way. Fenty Beauty’s new liquid eyeliners are exactly the right amount of neon.
Fenty Beauty Baecae Vivid Liquid Eyeliner Trio, £27 Boots
Lip & cheek duo
When I’m looking peaky and pale, I always have a rosy blusher with me to fake a natural flush and make myself look a little more human and less walking dead. Ideally, it would be one that I could use on my lips too so that I don’t have to carry an extra product with me. Smashbox’s Beverly Hill Blush is the ideal shade to bring me back to life.
Smashbox L.A. Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Colour, £26 Boots
Hyaluronic acid serum
Booze doesn’t just dehydrate your insides, it does the same to skin too. As soon as I wake up, I can feel how parched my skin is, which is why hyaluronic acid is key. Ever since I discovered L’Oreal Paris’ replumping ampoules I’ve been obsessed, because they’re perfect for travel. You only have to pack the number of ampoules for the number of days.
L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Replumping Ampoules £19.99 Boots
Moisturiser
This might sound obvious, but by god do not forget this. Your skin will thank you. I like to take Embryolisse with me – it’s a cult beauty product, because it isn’t too heavy, rids the skin of dry, flaky patches and sinks in quickly. It’s loved by make-up artists for weddings and backstage. Plus it can be used on the face and body, so another multi-use product.
Embyolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Nourishing Moisturiser, £20 Boots
Dry Shampoo
I don’t need to remind you of this do I?! Leave your shampoo and conditioner at home, embrace the dirt and give your hair a break. This Colab one has UV protection and doesn’t leave a white residue – ideal.
Colab Dry Shampoo Active, £2.33 Boots
Supplements
Specifically, rehydration salts. When you’re hungover, you’ve got to replace the salts you lost the night before getting tiddly. First thing in the morning is great, just before you go to bed is even better. If you manage to do on the night, you’ll be my hero.
Rehydration Treatment, £2.39 for 6 sachets Boots
Suncream
Pack this along with gallons of positive thoughts. Annoyingly, the British weather isn’t exactly reliable. I have been to so many festivals where it rain from the moment I enter through the gates, to the moment I pass through them again when I leave. But sometimes, sometimes, the weather holds out for us and is gloriously sunny. POTENTIALLY ADD SOMETHING HERE ABOUT GLASTONBURY AS ITS MEANT TO BE SUNNY. On these rare occasions, you need your suncream. BBut I wouldn’t bother packing a big bottle – we must remain realistic – so this pocket sized Nivea SPF30 is perfect.
Nivea Sun Suncream Pocket Size Lotion SPF30, £3 Boots
Hand sanitizer
If you haven’t packed this, you should probably just go straight home. You musn’t, under any circumstances, forget this. I cannot express this strongly enough. Keep it on you at all times. If you haven’t been to a festival before, then nothing can quite prepare you for the loo situation, but at least with this to hand you will feel some what in control. Sort of.
Carex Moisture Plus Hand Gel, £1 Boots
Glitter
Every year I tell myself not to take glitter – partly because of how bad it is for the planet and partly because I wish I was more imaginative. Badly applied glitter is the beauty equivalent to a flower crown: basic. However, I always get sucked into the whole rigmarole and end up packing a few pots, just in case. Luckily, brands are more clued up with being sustainable and there are now loads of biodegradable options, which means I can pack the pots guilt-free.

Icons of London with the Dunhill Icon collection Is there anything more iconically British than the Union Jack? Sure the flag represents the union of England, Scotland and Ireland to historians and politicians, but to you and I, it means just one thing… London baby!! Yeahhhh! During our recent trip to London (full post coming soon) we decided to take an entire day of exploring everything that makes this city so iconic. Along for the journey was the new Dunhill Icon collection – A collection of fragrance set to capture the essence of the modern British gentleman and this iconic Britsh brand. 3 piece suit in tow, we packed our bags with the Dunhill Icon and the Icon Absolute and headed out into this cold and rainy… summers day! How very British! With so many cultural icons spread throughout the city, it’s kinda hard to know where to begin so we chose to start where most Londoners end their day, with a pint at the pub. With over 7000 public houses (or ‘pubs’) in London alone, we didn’t have to walk very far. This great British tradition has been around since the Medieval period with London’s oldest pub, “Ye Olde Mitre” still standing strong over 500 years later! Not surprisingly, we found ourselves joining the lunchtime rush at The Red Lion, the odds were pretty strong though, it’s the most common pub name in Britain. The British fascination with red is pretty evident across its cultural icons, the postbox, the phone box and of course the double-decker bus were all painted red as a way of making them stand out. Once just a horse-drawn carriage, it was the London General omnibus company who iconified the double-decker bus with its signature red. This attention to detail is no more evident than in the world’s most famous tailoring street, London’s Saville Row. A bastion of great British tailoring and the home of the bespoke suit. Here master tailors have been crafting made-to-measure suits since the 1800s, turning out one of a kind pieces for anyone from the king of pop to, well, the king himself – No, not Elvis… I mean the actual King… of England. Made to measure is however not strictly confined to Saville Row, a few blocks down at Dunhills flagship London store on Jermyn street awaits a Saville Row-trained master tailor ready to create your dream suit. Dunhills Legacy of luxury products has made it a true Icon of the modern British gentleman recognized the world over. The brand’s early origins in the motoring business remain evident in its DNA to this day with its signature machine turned knurling pattern found on everything from lighters to wallets and of course every bottle of the Dunhill Icon range. The full range of products caters to any gentleman (as long as he is indeed a gentleman) and most importantly remains true to Alfred Dunhills vision “It is not enough to expect a man to pay for the best, you must also give him what he has paid for”. Walking around the Jermyn street store pictured above really brings Alfred Dunhills vision of craftsmanship and innovation to life! I was like a kid in a candy store… except my parents just hadn’t given me enough money to get the candy I wanted! Leaving the store with nothing more than a wishlist, I spruced up with some Dunhill Icon and headed back into town. Getting around London is easy, but be prepared to walk, we clocked up no fewer than 10km a day in exploratory footsteps. You can of course always ‘mind the gap” and hop onto another London icon, the Underground. The worlds first subterranean train network has built up over 250miles of railway since it started in 1863 and can literally take you anywhere in the city. It’s come a long way since its steam train inception and the tube (named by Londoners because of the tunnels) has seen everything from world war 2 bunkers to famous celebrity buskers. Busking on the underground is both legal and legit (meant the way the cool kids mean it) and will definitely bring some joy to your commute. These days you won’t even need to find a ‘quid’ to tip your favorite muso, just tap your RFID card on their receiver to say “thanks geezer”. : ) If you prefer to commute above ground you can always flag down the infamous London black cab, just don’t go yelling “TAXI” when you do so as believe it or not it’s against the law. This may be the most expensive way to get around London but it is quite possibly the most efficient. London cab drivers need to pass a test (known as “the Knowledge”) that requires them to memorize over 25 000 streets and 20 000 landmarks as well as route a trip from A to B purely by memory (that’s right, no map, no GPS and no Waze – see what I did there?). Feel free to pack your bowler hat for the journey, legally, all black cabs need to be tall enough to accommodate a passenger wearing a bowler hat. Tip top I say! As you can imagine, walking 10km in search of Icons will build up quite an appetite but with almost 40 000 service establishments in London alone, you really are spoilt for choice. If we are completely honest, with names like Spotted Dick and Toad in the Hole, British cuisine has never really caught on! The exception to the rule and perhaps the most iconic of all British food is, of course, Fish and Chips. This simple dish of fried fish and potatoes is, in fact, such a big part of British life that it was the only food not rationed during the world war – once you cover it in salt and malt vinegar, you’ll quickly understand why! To be fair, the above Icons may fulfill our romantic dreams of London, but they are all historical (or traditional) and not really a true reflection of modern-day London. Todays London is very much a cultural melting pot that curates the best the world has to offer and puts it all in one place. The icons are forever changing, they’re a nod to the past and a look to the future, it’s Tower Bridge behind you as you walk towards The Shard; It’s cocktails in Soho and ramen in Chinatown! The Dunhill Icon collection has been created in exactly the same way, it remains true to its British heritage while celebrating the best ingredients the world has to offer! It’s Italian Bergamot and Lavender de Provence, it’s spices from the orient and Leather from Tuscany, crafted into a masculine scent and encapsulated in an engine turned bottle that is so unmistakably Britsih, so unmistakably Dunhill. The collection caters to a man of timeless elegance, a man of style not fashion, whether he is out exploring the world, or appreciating the finer things in life at home. Combined with his fragrance he radiates confidence without arrogance, appeal without ego. Quite simply, he is a gentleman. Explore the full collection below to find out what Dunhill Icon you are. Dunhill Icon – Dunhill Icon Absolute – Dunhill Icon Elite – Dunhill Icon Racing Oaky. Stay fancy. PS: A special Thank you to Virgin Atlantic for making our trip to London possible and to The Radison Blu Edwardian for hosting us during our stay. whatmyboyfriendwore

Dressiquette – Button to Button When it comes to men’s fashion there are certain rules one should adhere to, after all, if the devil is in the details we want to be the most handsome devils out there don’t we? I started this “Dressiquete” section of the blog right at the beginning – almost 6 years ago -as a way to lay out the basic rules of men’s fashion and give us all (yep, me included) some basic fundamentals with which to dapper ourselves up! After all, you cant start breaking those rules before you know them right? Most of them were really badly written and the imagery was disgraceful ( remember it was 6 years ago) so I’ve decided to jazz em up a bit with a little more details and some better pictures. So here’s the first. Before I go on let me make it super clear that these are not MY rules, I never made them up and most of them have no recorded history. Much like a good brownie recipe, I suspect they have been passed down from generation to generation. Whether you adhere to them or not is your decision, but let’s try ensure our generation isn’t the first to forget them shall we. I believe it was Oscar Wilde who declared “A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life”. Now, to be fair, the man was a poet, so he did have a way with words but he was also the original playboy so I see no reason why we shouldn’t believe him. This begs the question “why is it so many men struggle with their ties”? I ‘m not even talking about tie knots and shirt combinations, I’m talking about something far more basic. Length. The ruling on this is pretty simple: Ties run button to button – that is your tie should cover the top button on your collar and the button of your pants. Now unless your pants have no button, this should be fairly simple. That said, if you’re wearing a tie with track pants (or any buttonless trousers that is) then length is not your problem so more power to you. For those of you striving for ultimate precision, the widest part of the tie should hang at the same height as the upper edge of your belt leaving the tip dangling somewhere down the middle. There is, of course, some leeway here, not much, but some. When in doubt, go longer rather than shorter, I generally like the tip of my tie to juuuuust cover my belt buckle – This is mostly because I hate belt buckles, but still. If you prefer a little shorter, just ensure the tip of the tie is at least touching your belt buckle, please (I have a pet hate for short ties). The above also applies to straight edged ties, like knitted ties (where the widest part is also the edge) and should at the very least touch your belt buckle. Now, this rule may be simple, but it’s not always easy to get right and will definitely require a little practice. Prepare for a little frustration, different tie lengths, fabrics, and knots will all play a part in ensuring that perfect button to button length. Remember, if at first, you don’t succeed, TIE, TIE again!! Okay. Stay Fancy. whatmyboyfriendwore
