TWO WAYS TO WEAR WHITE HEELS June 29, 2018 at 01:00PM
Wearing white shoes can be a real challenge. White sneakers, though, are less of a hassle. Those are a wardrobe staple nowadays, and literally look good with anything – think the good old Stan Smith’s or my new white Chloe high tops – but a pair of heals in white makes us easily feel out of our “comfort zone”, so to speak. Funny, isn’t it? How the color of a pair of shoes can define how we feel about that specific pair. Especially when it’s the “non-colour” white, which should theoretically be the easiest, as it goes with anything. Yet, we fear them… or, at least, we don’t wear them as often as a pair of black heels. This is – I’m sure – a huge waste, so here’s a little edit on how you could wear white heels this summer, plus a selection of the best white heels – and a few sneakers – for less…

This Skincare Product is for Your Hair June 29, 2018 at 12:45PM
If you’ve been following the blog over the past month, you know that I recently switched up my skincare routine to focus much more on anti-aging. I’ve always been a skincare advocate, but now that I’m in my late-30s and have gone through the emotional swings of having kids (which as my fellow mamas know, effects your skin in multiple ways!), I’m much more conscious about what kinds of products I use and how they’re protecting my skin from free radicals and other environmental factors that contribute to premature aging. My next beauty project: anti-aging hair care.
When most people think about aging hair, they think of strands going gray. But because your scalp is actually the same skin that’s on your face, it’s also subject to aging due to scalp issues like dryness and flaking, which then impacts the youthfulness of your hair. When scalp skin is under a high level of oxidative stress, the hair can be damaged, thus impacting the quality of growing hair as it matures within the follicle. This can result in hair dullness, loss of shine, and breakage. So just like your face, your scalp needs to be future-proofed with scalp care, so it can continue to produce strong, vibrant strands that aren’t brittle and prone to breakage.
I recently started researching reliable hair care brands that offer products with future-proofing benefits, and was surprised to find that Head & Shoulders was on the list—in fact, it’s the first haircare brand to win a skin award from Cosmopolitan magazine, for its Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner!
Growing up, my mom, who has straight, fine hair, always used Head & Shoulders, but I never thought it could work on my curly hair type. Now knowing all the skincare benefits of the Smooth & Silky Shampoo & Conditioner, I gave it a chance and am loving the results so far! Like my facial complexion, my scalp has been struggling postpartum, leading to super dry skin and lots of breakage. The Smooth & Silky Collection moisturizes, rejuvenates, detoxifies, and restores balance to my scalp, which creates a healthier foundation for hair to grow.
I’m happy to report that my hair looks and feels healthier after using it for just 3 weeks! It feels clean each time I shampoo, while still maintaining the moisture my curls desperately need, and my postpartum fall-out has even settled down a bit, which I couldn’t be happier about. Just goes to show that caring for the skin on your head is just as important as caring for the skin on your face!

The little known fact behind *that* iconic Michael Jackson outfit
Who didn’t grow up listening to that Michael Jackson Thriller album on repeat? But while you may know all the lyrics to Thriller and Pretty Young Thing by heart, there’s a little known fact you probably didn’t know about the cover itself.
The iconic white suit which epitomised 80s style so perfectly, almost didn’t happen, because MJ was originally going to wear something else. When none of the looks the stylist had on set that day worked, he actually spotted the Hugo Boss suit the photographer, Dick Zimmerman, was wearing and pointed out it would be perfect.
So Zimmerman and MJ swapped clothes for the shoot, and the rest as they say is history.
This fact was revealed thanks to a new exhibition which has just opened at the National Portrait Gallery. Michael Jackson: On The Wall, sponsored by HUGO BOSS, which runs until 21st October 2018, coincides with what would’ve been MJ’s 60th birthday (on 29th August).
The exhibition looks at the influence Michael Jackson had on many contemporary artists such David LaChapelle, and for the first time ever showcases the works of over 40 artists together in one place.
Tickets cost from £15.50 and you can book here.

Here’s How I Tame My Short Curls Like A Pro Curls, curls, curlz. Taming them is a funny ol’ task, isn’t it? We’re out here trying to bolster their big personality, whilst also ~manipulating~ each individual curl into submission. “Be full of life”, we say! But as a team, it’s all, “Please don’t go flying off, you wispy rogue strands!” Styling curly hair may be a mission, but finding natural hair products that actually work (!!) is a whole ‘nother ball game entirely. The lack of lathering power, the untouched grease residue, the sad limp locks, you name it—when it comes to products that don’t work, I’ve tried ’em all. So, over the course of a month, I decided to test out curly natural products that were highly recommended to me from those in the know, in order to save us all the time, money and heartbreak that comes with using products that don’t werk. Read on, my frizzy-headed friends, so you and your curls may harmoniously coexist forever… women@priscillas.com.au @stefan_wellsmore A post shared by @ sianhenderson_ on Jun 17, 2018 at 7:39pm PDT Bumble and Bumble Curl Shampoo & Conditioner The Shampoo: To my pleasant surprise, I was met with an overabundance of bubbles frothing about the place and right into my very roots! That’s a big yes from me, dawg. I knew that I wouldn’t have to wash it twice immediately—as is often the case with natural shampoos. Upon rinsing, my hair had that squeaky-clean texture, whilst smelling soft and sweet but subtle. My hair drying into relaxed curls with less frizz. To give away the ending, this was my favourite product! The Conditioner: I am an everyday fan of messy-bun but it leaves my locks in constant knots. The best thing about this product is when I untied the band, my curls fell gently down upon my shoulders, rather than staying in a confused ‘fro. Great if you like soft and loose curls, not so much if you want definition and grit. Davines Love Shampoo & Conditioner The Shampoo: I was hit initially with a strong “clean” scent. An ideal smell when cleaning your hair is the objective, sure, but my nostrils were personally overwhelmed. On the upside though, it lathered with impressive foam, and upon drying, it had fab twirl and bounce. I felt lifted by my hair’s volume that day. The Conditioner: The royalty treatment of conditioners, this paste is beautiful from first touch. Thick and creamy, you scoop it out onto your finger like dessert, with a little going a long way. I found myself unable to stop touching my hair, it was so silky. Perfect for anyone prone to splits. Couch slouchin’ A post shared by @ sianhenderson_ on Jan 17, 2018 at 10:19pm PST Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Style Cream This cream was also pleasantly light but actually managed to entice my curls into an orderly fashion. Amplifying their twists and minimising frizz. What I love about this product is I can comb it through my wet hair then bop about my day. Leaving it unattended to work its way into a well-held package of curls. Botanique Nourish & Replenish Hydration Mask It is as it says, a mask. The moment I applied it, I could feel my strands lapping up the hydration, soaking in all dat nourishment. It was a pampering experience, which made me appreciate it in another light. I hydrated my ends, did a face scrub, and shaved my legs! #TreatYoSelf. Washing it out, my hair slipped about in silky goodness between my fingers, and then afterwards, my curls fell soft and loose, and I can say with absolute certainty that they are healthier for it. Ouai Anti-Frizz Hair Sheet These sheets are an easy go-to that work. While I wouldn’t commit to the wastage of using a wipe every day, they are super handy for last minute ‘dos. Literally swipe over your hair, whether it’s up or loose, and see the frizz lay down upon your head for a few hours. These are one of those keep-in-your-handbag types! I hope this helps you curly haired ladies out there. If you have any other product recommendations, please pop them in the comments below! The Art of Subtle Details Wearing: Joseph top and Joseph pants Well, if you’re looking for comfortable yet chic pants, that feel like you’re still in your pyjamas, then boy, do I have a treat for you. These high waisted, relaxed fit, straight leg pants by one of our favourite UK brands Joseph, are the answer. The subtle detail of the D-ring and white stitch on the belt is all you need to elevate these classic pants. Meanwhile, this scarf isn’t just me be all accessorised, its actually part of the top. Love an unexpected detail that isn’t OTT. *shot in collaboration with Joseph Photos by Hannah Roche Harper and Harley

Oysters on the Ears Wearing: By Nye Oyster earrings, Frame jacket, Vintage Levis If you haven’t yet gotten acquainted with Melbourne based jewellery designer By Nye, (Pronounced: nigh) then sit up and take notice. Her pieces are all made from solid sterling silver, hard gold ct plating and are constantly selling out at The UNDONE. The price point hits the sweet spot, while quality and craftsmanship exceeds expectations. I’m obsessed with these oyster earrings for their detail and wow factor, and then the smaller ‘crustacean’ options are also just as good. Photos by Ana Suntay-Tanedo Harper and Harley

The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Luminous Skin While I’d love to be the kind of person who luxuriates in getting ready of a morning—casually sipping on hot water and lemon, completing a 12-step skincare routine, reading the newspaper, and carefully applying makeup without keeping a careful eye on the clock—I’m much more of a get up ‘n’ go kinda gal. It’s why I’ve pretty much adopted a Monday-to-Friday work uniform (hello blazers and dad sneakers, my old friends), and how I’ve come to be a master at doing my makeup in under five minutes. Tru story. My main goal when it comes to makeup is to look as if I’m barely wearing any at all. Logic! While that may seem counterintuitive, “no makeup makeup” is pretty much the french girl style of the beauty world—it’s effortless, casual and goes with everythanggg (what’s more timeless than naturally glowy skin?). I essentially just want to look like the most luminous version of myself without putting too much effort in, and that’s something that can be easily achieved, as I found out recently while trialling Giorgio Armani’s Neo Nude range (my new beauty BFF). The Neo-Nude range is essentially the crème de la crème when it comes to products that make you look as if you’ve rolled out of bed with #flawless skin. And the best bit? It’s super easy to achieve while you’re on the go. See for yourself below! PS: for anyone that’s heading to Europe for summer (which seems to be everyone on Instagram but me), it’s lightweight af and is the perf thing to pack for sun-kissed, luminous skin. 1) Start With A Super Luminous Base The Neo-Nude Fusion Powder was made for the girl on the go (a.k.a moi). If you need confirmation, just ask my newly glowing face. The sheer, luminous powder buffs into your skin to create a super #flawless and barely there finish, and can be applied super easily with the inbuilt brush. This is basically your fave liquid foundation in a practical compact container (that can be housed in your handbag for touch ups throughout the day as needed). Also, never live in fear of your foundation caking again. Just me? 2) Channel Your Inner Glam Squad, And Get Contouring The Neo-Nude range is all about enhancing rather than covering, and the contour is their ace card when it comes to amplifying what yo’ mumma gave you. To give the illusion of supermodel-esque cheek bones, apply two drops of the Neo-Nude A-Contour to the side of the cheek near your hairline, then blend horizontally towards the nose. Perf for creating definition, the contour is super easy to blend into your skin—you defs don’t have to be Kimmy K’s glam team to achieve a très sculpted look using it. 3) It’s Blush Time! It’s time to put some colour in those super sculpted cheeks. Look exactly the right amount of rosey by applying three tiny little dots of the The Neo Nude A-Blush to your cheeks, before blending it in with your fingertips. Nothing screams healthy glow like a little bit of rouge on yo’ cheeks, after all. 4) Highlight, Highlight, Highlight Now for the highlight of today’s beauty routine (geddit?), I present you with a product that’s undoubtedly gonna steal the keys to your heart—the Neo Nude A-Highlight. The key to any “no makeup makeup” look is skin that glows subtly (without looking too obviously “made up”) and this is the product that’s guaranteed to make people think you ~woke up like dis~. So, to finish off this super quick makeup routine, I blend the highlighter over my upper cheekbones, nose and brow bones to add a luminous glow, and then to my cupid’s bow to add a little shine and fullness to my lips. Voila! And there you have it, friends! My easy-to-achieve “no makeup makeup” lewk that will keep you glowing well into the night. 6 Outfit Ideas For Your European Summer Holiday Ah, folks, it’s that time of year again. Everyone in the entire Instagram universe, to the exclusion of me, is making the journey across the pond for the second most snap-worthy event on the calendar (after Coachella, duh). It’s called European Summer 2018, and it’s no doubt being broadcasted on a ‘gram feed near you. While I weigh up the pros and cons of wearing bed socks to work (pros: delightfully toasty, closest thing to wearing a doona on your feet there is, cons: sneakers won’t fit, would no doubt solidify my status as social pariah), these Euro-trippers are smugly chipping away at my sanity one Aperol spritz, puffed sleeve, and cobbled backstreet snap at a time. Most years I obligingly lap up the sun-drenched content for about four days, before resolving to set fire to my phone until the start of August so I can continue to live out my winter life in peace. Once the end of Euro summer rolls around, I make empty promises to myself to book flights for the following year, so that I may too become the person who uploads excessive amounts of pizza and sunset pictures, jazzed up with *witty* captions and a dusting of #suitable #hashtags. This year, I’ve decided to channel my angsty FOMO into something more productive. I’ve compiled a list of everything I would be packing in my suitcase were I about to head off for Europe’s glistening shores. Pretty selfless, right? For everyone who was smart enough to book flights this year, pls send me a pic of you slurping on an aperitif so that I may live my best lyfe through you. For everyone who isn’t, see you there in 2019 (and let’s get a head start on our summer lewks for the end of 2018, shall we?)… It should be said that there’s nothing more ~on-trend~ than sun safety, so once you’re done packing your SPF50+ and bucket hat, make some room in your bags for the following outfit essentials… Shevoke sunglasses, Hunza G bikini Bikinis To Slurp Back An Aperol Spritz In SPLURGE: It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to physically make it through Italy or the South of France without drinking at least 3+ Aperol spritzes per day, and that activity, dear friends, calls for at LEAST two cute bikinis in your suitcase. I don’t ~do~ bucket lists, but if I were to start now, owning this Hunza G bikini would be at the top of it (let’s be real, this one of theirs, too). I can also definitely see myself on a cobbled beach wearing this Zimmermann polka dot off-the-shoulder number, this cute Ganni triangle bikini (with a matching scrunchie!!!!!!), or these actual to-die-for She Made Me bloomers. If you’re in the market for a bikini that double as a top, this Peixoto smocked bikini top should do the trick! SAVE: If you don’t want to spend all your holiday money before you’ve even left the country (as is my M.O.), then Glassons have got you covered on the cheap bikini front. Lean into this season’s high-cut trend with these Simple Rib Bikini Briefs which pair nicely with this Scoop Bikini Top, and while we’re on the topic of high-cut bottoms, these Fella briefs are probably the most flattering thing I’ve introduced my butt to, ever. If you’re after a simple black triangle bikini, this L’URV one has got your back! ACCESSORISE WITH: A pair of good ol’ fashioned Tevas, and a net bag for all your beach goodies. Rejina Pyo dress, LOQ sandals Dresses For People Watching With A Latte In Hand SPLURGE: There’s really no greater time/place to jump on the milk maid gravy train than in Europe during summer, which is ideal since I would happily wear this Rejina Pyo puff-sleeve dress every single day for the rest of my liiiife. I’m assuming you’re in the same boat, which means that the cost-per-wear on this puppy almost qualifies it as a ‘SAVE’ purchase (especially considering it’s currently 50% off!). This pink one of theirs in a similar style is probably more adorable than a puppy sleeping, so a really gr8 option if you want to be the cutest girl in Europe. SAVE: When it comes to dresses that are as affordable as they are stylish, no one does it better than Reformation (see here, here and here for proof!). Pixie Market also has a couple of cute options (my fingers added this dress to my shopping part faster than my brain could scream, “BUT YOU’RE NOT EVEN GOING TO EUROPE???”). Would maybe marry this dress if it were legal (or at the least, get married IN IT). And I’m also not mad at this Zara dress, just for the record. ACCESSORISE WITH: Sandals! These LOQ ones are cute to boot, as are these Tanya ones. It would also be a missed opportunity not to adorn your ears with these beautiful pearl earrings. Peony Black One-Piece, Le Specs x Jordan Askill sunglasses Sophisticated One-Pieces For Reading Sophisticated Novels In SPLURGE: If my shopping baskets at the moment say anything about me, it’s that I have watched Baywatch and I have taken notes—see this Matteau red one-piece, or this Hunza G one-piece (also red), for proof. This lime green Ack one-piece is the swimsuit equivalent of eating a Splice ice cream, and this Onia gingham one-piece with a built-in belt couldn’t be any more sophisticated if it tried. Guys, you’ll have to excuse me for a second, it appears my FOMO has gotten the better of me. I really must go lie down for a second… *Breathes deeply into a paper bag on the office couch* Okay, back! Where were we? Oh, yes! Affordable one-piece swimsuits… SAVE: This khaki one-piece is as easy on the eye as it is the pocket, as is this very sleek black number! ACCESSORISE WITH: This linen shirt, these Sarah & Sebastian earrings, and these très chic Le Specs sunglasses. Etsy scrunchie, Nike shoes, Realisation Par dress Easy, Breezy Dresses For A Day Spent Sightseeing SPLURGE: “But we’ve already covered dresses”, I hear you protest, to which I say, “First of all, you can really never have too many dresses, and secondly, sightseeing really calls for something a bit breezier than the aforementioned dresses.” As such, you absolutely cannot head to Europe without packing this Realisation Par dress in your bag (or this one, I can’t decide), closely followed by this Reformation dress. SAVE:This little yellow dress is an affordable slice of heaven and this black silk ASOS one is a real treat for the ol’ eyeballs. ACCESSORISE WITH: It’s crucial you set off for a day of sightseeing in the freshest white sneakers you can find, frilly socks and a cute (but cost-effective) scrunchie! Oh, and these affordable Kenneth Jay Lane gold hoops while you’re at it. Emilio Pucci sarong, Cult Gaia bag Beach-To-Bar Sarongs And Basket Bags SPLURGE: Remember that matching bikini and scrunchie from Ganni that I mentioned earlier? Turns out there’s A SARONG IN THE SAME PRINT, TOO!!!! I’m pretty tempted to book a flight to Europe based solely off that fact alone. Aaaaand a quick glance at my bank account confirms that is not financially tenable, but I guess I could muster up enough dollars to buy this Paradised Tasseled sarong as a consolation prize instead. Or maybe this Ganni leopard print sarong. What do you think? SAVE:This H&M black sarong is kind of perfecto and it’s only seven dollarydoos! ACCESSORISE WITH: Basket bags, friends! This Cult Gaia bag will hold a place in my heart forever! This Sensi Tote would also be accompanying me all over Europe if I were actually going (can you tell I’m bitter?). Ancient Greek sandals, Bassike jeans, SEA blouse Blouses For Enjoying The Heck Out Of A Bowl Of Spaghetti In SPLURGE: Okay, so your bag should be 90% ready to go by now! In the spirit of saving the best for last, let’s round out this shopping edit with the perfect outfit for treatin’ yo self to a pasta and wine feast. A room-y blouse is crucial for slurping up that spaghetti, and why not start with this SEA blouse since it’s black and therefore perfect for spillage. If you’re not overly risk-averse, this Rixo London polka dot top is the cutest, and if you’re completely confident in your ability to sip on red wine without accidentally pouring it on yourself, then I suggest you invest in this white lace-up Chosen linen blouse (if your drink does manage to escape from the glass, we’ve got you covered on the stain removal front here). SAVE: This vintage-inspired blouse is ideal for all those balmy European evenings you’re about to be lapping up, as is this lavender gingham top and this cute lil’ white cotton Reformation number. ACCESSORISE WITH: Style your cute new Victorian-era blouse with the only jeans you’ll ever want to wear again and these Ancient Greek sandals (which will go with *literally* everything in your wardrobe). What’s Your Go-To Salad Recipe? Guys, you’ve gotta help me out here. If I have to look at another tuna and rice salad I might just scream. For the past year or so I have happily leaned on it as my ‘ride or die’ mid-week salad for reasons of being delicious, filling, and super cost-friendly. Recently, though, I have begun to harbour an irrational distain for the ol’ tuna and rice salad. Too much of a good thing, I suppose. That’s where you come in. My tastebuds are hankering for a new flavour combo, and my workmates have had it up to ~here~ with listening to my tragic salad woes. I’m not looking for anything too *fancy* mind you, just something that will mildly impress those around me, and which will keep my insides nice and happy. Pls pull me out of my salad rut by sharing your fave go-to salad recipe below. Let’s win friends with salad, shall we? So, what exactly is balayage and why do we love it so much?
Make an appointment with your stylist now
Balayage has been around for a while, but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair colour requests in salons today. We’ve spoken to the experts to get some professional insight into the booming hair trend, balayage.
What is balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. ‘It’s a freehand hair colouring technique that gives a really blended natural look with no harsh or obvious regrowth lines,’ advises royal and celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward.
Balayage allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair colour, similar to what nature gives us as children, with softer, less noticeable re-growth. The principal idea being less is more when creating a natural, multi-tonal finish. The technique uses patches of light and shade to create multiple dimensions to the colour.
It’s a great method if you want to refresh your colour but don’t want to go for a bold colour overhaul.
How is balayage applied?
Balayage is painted on the surface of the hair strand and not saturated through the section until the very tips. This ensures a smooth, blended stroke of colour. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foil or meche are used to create the highlights.
How long does it take to do balayage?
The depth of balayage can vary so much from a ‘few small highlights that will only take a matter of minutes to a full on, triple process look that can take up to 3 hours,’ says Josh Wood, founder of Josh Wood Atelier and Redken Global Colour Creative Director. Though it can take quite a long time to do a multi-tonal, layered balayage compared to regular colour the benefit of the application means you will be able to leave longer between your next colour appointment. If you want a few balayage babylights this may take as little as 45 minutes.
What sets it apart from traditional hair colouring?
Balayage is quite different to traditional highlights because no foil is used and the colour is painted on freehand. The finished result is ‘less uniform than typical highlights’ says Richard Ward. If you’ve ever been worried about having stripey colour after a visit to the hairdressers, balayage is a sure way to avoid that harsh contrast between colours – especially if you’re going blonder.
The colour created is totally bespoke to you and can even be placed in a way to compliment or distract attention away from certain features on the face.

What’s making it so popular recently?
Ten years ago balayage wasn’t the colouring phenomenon it is today, it’s quite a specific method of colouring that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Balayage ‘is especially popular with celebrities and is a classic look for the red carpet’ says Richard Ward. After spotting it on celebrities like Gisele, Chrissy Teigen and Jessica Alba, there has been a surge in interest for the technique as people are requesting the look.
Some celebrities who love balayage include Olivia Palermo, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Amber Heard.
Does it require a lot of maintenance?
‘Typically balayage requires far less maintenance than traditional colour because it grows out beautifully and there are no strong regrowth lines,’ says Richard Ward. It also means you can wait for longer between appointments so it’s ‘the perfect technique for a modern, busy woman.’
‘If you want to make your balayage last as long as possible, opt for a babylight – it’s the most subtle type of colour you can go for’ advises Josh Wood. Investing in some good quality colour care styling products is also advisable to keep your colour looking fresh for longer.
If your colour turns brassy after a while you can ‘refresh it without going for a full top up with a toner or gloss to give your shine back.’ says Wood.
Is it suitable for all hair types/lengths?
It works on both light and dark hair depending on how much lighter you want to go and all hair textures. Whether it’s straight, wavy or curly the colour will still work well and look great.
‘Balayage works on all hair lengths apart from on very short or cropped hair,’ advises international hair colourist Jack Howard.
The technique is particularly popular amongst celebrities with long, textured hair as it creates a beautiful, beachy style.
How long does balayage last?
One of the biggest perks of balayage is that “it doesn’t require as much upkeep as traditional colour” advises Josh Wood. The blended finish means you can leave longer between your salon appointments, depending on the style of balayage you go for you can leave up to 4 months between top-ups.
What’s the difference between ombre and balayage?
Balayage is a totally blended hair look, there are no lines or blocks of colour and the graduation between shades is much more subtle. Some lengths of the hair are kept darker for a seamless colour finish.
Ombre hair has a more defined contrast between the roots and tips of the hair with colour starting mid-way down the strands. Ombre colour ‘is a more noticeable, statement look compared to Balayage,’ says Richard Ward. Want to know more? Check out our round-up if want to find out more about ombre.
Does balayage work on grey hair?
Balayage works for all colours but ‘the only thing is it won’t cover grey hair,’ advises Josh Wood, ‘it will only help blend in the grey to disguise it so if you want full coverage for greys it might not be the right choice for you.’
What makes it timeless?
Balayage creates a totally bespoke, personalised colour finish. Healthy, natural looking hair will always be ‘in’ which is why the technique has remained popular for so many years. Depending on what you’re looking for the finish can be subtle or quite bold. It’s the ability to completely tailor the colour effect that makes this such a popular colour choice.

THE BEST RED DRESSES THIS SUMMER: DETERMINE WHICH SHADE WORKS FOR YOU! June 13, 2018 at 04:32PM
If there’s one thing in life I can tell you with 100% certainty, that is that you need at least one red dress in your wardrobe. Why? Because red is good for you; It lifts your spirit, makes you feel fierce, and boosts your confidence. Don’t try to tell me that you and your beautiful blond hair or dark waves don’t go together with that red dress you bought ages ago – and therefore never worn – because I’m sure it’s just a matter of finding “the right shade or red”. Maybe you just didn’t find it yet, and you need some guidance in finding it! So let’s do a little crash course on red dresses and how to wear them, because there’s a burgundy, or a fire-red – or 500 other tones in the middle – for everyone…
I usually look at it four different ways: hair color – blond or brunette, including strawberry red and auburn in that spectrum – and someone’s skin tone. No matter how light or dark your skin is, there’s always a cold or more warm undertone to it. In identifying a color for myself or someone else, I first look at that skin undertone. With a more warm undertone it’s possible to go for a more bright red, or even an orange-red. However, when your skin tone leans more towards a colder undertone, you should maybe stay away from those, and go for the more full, round, and darker reds. Good examples of those shades are Burgundy and cherry-red. And when I’m thinking about it, it truly doesn’t really matter what hair color you have when it comes to a red, as long as you stay in those two spectrums I just mentioned – the colder and warmer skin undertones, and the reds that go with that. It all comes down to trying a few different shades. However, something that is key though, in making that shade or red look fierce on you, is your makeup.
I’m generally all for natural and less is more when it comes to doing my makeup, and when I’m talking about makeup that goes with a red dress in general, I think the best way to do it is: keep the rest simple. A super light coverage foundation to just “erase” spots or red blemish on your skin – I have that always in the morning after taking a shower – and maybe the discolorations we build up here and there over the years. Not even think of covering those dark circles completely, it’s not necessary when the rest of your skin looks healthy. I’m speaking from experience! For the longest time I would start by covering those puffy dark eye bags, but I recently stepped away from it, because I didn’t like to wear a thick layer of makeup on that delicate part of my skin. I would always “feel” it. Just a simple thin layer of foundation over my complete face already makes that those parts I don’t like, are less visible, without looking less “natural”. Then I would say a good mascara, brushed eyebrows with a little extra color, and some bronzer when your undertone is warm. The more cooler undertones should go for some pink blush on the cheeks, but other than that, keep it simple with the mascara and eyebrows.
A red lip with a red dress can look divine, too. I truly wish I loved myself with lipstick on, but I simply don’t, so it’s not my thing. I envy women with full lips who look so good with a red lip! Key, again, is to make sure the rest of the makeup is super simple, but just flawless and light. That red dress, is already making a statement, and the rest doesn’t need to be full-on.
For this post I’m wearing a beautiful Valentino Pre-Fall 2018 dress in “Valentino-red”. Which is a pretty iconic kind of red that has been around since the start of the brand, and looks good on literally everyone. Obviously! I must admit that when we shot this in Verona, I came of from the plane straight, so my skin does lack a little bit of life, but the makeup is pretty much as how I envision it for my hair and skin tone. It’s super subtile, with the right amount of coverage. I don’t need to make a point about the styling of the dress, because we all know I like my gowns with sneakers! So below a selection of dresses, high and low-end, that all look good with sneakers, and hopefully help you to determine the shade or red for you!
